Default 48 volt circuit breaker ?

Hi.

I have a Taylor Dunn D385 motor that I will be using at 48 volts. This is a complete custom job that I am fabricating. I can't find any max working amperage on this motor. Have a call into Taylor Dunn but haven't heard anything yet.

I need to know what amp circut breaker from the batteries inline to the main system contactor solenoid that I should be using? Any recommendations where to aquire it?

Same question also for the positive wire going to the keyswitch powering the controls. What size breaker should I be using?

Thanks!

Lee

Well, turns out that I dont have a Taylor Dunn motor I have a Advanced Motors and Drives DC motor BPO-4003 for 48 volt application.

Talked to Taylor Dunn and they gave me some general information but wasn't real pointed. My controller is a Flight Systems Industrial Products controller. Talked to them and they told me for over current protection will be dependent on the protection of the motor itself. Because of the amperage that the motor requires. If that amperage exceeds the controller amperage (Which I believe is 700a) then the over current protection on the motor itself protects that the controller doesn't get over amped.

Does this sound correct?

Guess I am a bit confused because the controller seems to still be receiving voltage through the keyswitch and the potentiometers. Shouldn't there be some kind of over current protection within the controls themselves? (positive connection that runs through the keyswitch, potentiometers)

Check Alltrax site they recommend 400 amp fuses inline.

I will certainly check them out. I was talking to an EzGo dealer tech and he had helped me a lot.

Still having a hard time getting a spec sheet on my AMD motor. Can't get anyone to return phone calls and emails about it. Only people I hear from are the ones that DIDN'T manufacture or sell me these parts.

Thanks for the tip!

Use the 400 ANA fuse recommended by Alltrax for 400-700a controls. FSIP doesn't use fuses, but that doesn't mean you can't try to protect their control. The best place to land the fuse is at the B- terminal on the control.

I agree, ANN fuse. Your not going to find a cheap 50+ amp circuit breaker that you can reset. I do have a question though. How can a 400 amp ANN fuse be suggested for a anything over a 400 amp controller? Is it the slow blow mechanics, and you won't use that much current for a long enough time to blow the fuse? I don't get it. I put a 600 amp ANN in my cart for my 48500 controller, and them ain't cheap! Sorry to hijack but I had to ask.

Its time + current that affects how a ANN fuse will blow. The higher the current, the faster it will blow. At 1000 amps, a 400A ANN will blow in approximately 1s, at 2000A it looks like it will blow in 200ms, at 400A continuous it will not blow. (*see graph below)

Sonic that video is hilarious. 2 English boys after the pub having fun with amps. Probably should put a disclaimer up on this stuff not being suggested or recommended as it could kill you, but I laughed.

So this explains why my 48500 came with a 250 amp fuse. I will toss the 400 amp one back in it. *()^&*&#^@%$##&* hate wasting money, those 600 amp ones were not cheap.

Per your chart I could put the supplied 250 amp fuse back in.

Here is the Alltrax fuse page and what they recommend.

250 Amp Battery Fuse = Use with:
200 to 400 Amp
controllers

400 Amp Battery Fuse = Use with:
450 to 650 Amp
controllers

I'm pretty sure its impossible to kill yourself with ~2V. His high voltage videos have appropriate warnings.

At least it wasn't
the price of that 5000A fuse the price of that 5000A fuse
from the video...

You could probably sell it on the DIY electric car forums...
