Default Electric Hunting Buggy

A good friend of mine has been talking about building an electric hunting buggy for the last 3 years. Finally, I told him-lets build it or stop talking about it. He had seen some of my other projects and knew we would be able to make it work like he had envisioned, so we ordered a bunch of parts and started building. He wanted something similar to a barstool racer, but without a seat, and enough ground clearance and power to go through whatever he ran into on his hunting land. He wanted electric so that it would be quiet and enough range that he could run it a day back and forth from his camp to his stand (almost a mile each way). Since he was funding the project, I let him decide on the motor/controller/batteries we would use and I would handle the rest.

This is our 'creation':

At this point, we were ready to test. We weren't sure if 24 volts would do it, or if we were going to need 36. He ordered an Alltrax AXE4844 controller, so we had lots of flexibility. Also, the motor he ordered a Motenergy ME-0708 (over 20HP burst). OVERKILL?? Yes!!

Here is our test setup: (don't laugh)

After our test session, we realized that 24 volts (as well as some tweaking in the Alltrax programming) and other than gearing, we were spot on with 24 volts. Now to find the correct batteries to stand up to the type of use (abuse) we were going to subject them to. My buddy ran across some 12 volt AGM batteries that are 68AH each and are perfect. They aren't cheap, but are perfect for this project. Now, all it needed was to have a 'body' to cover all of the electronics, so out came the aluminum diamondplate:

Here is the (mostly) complete buggy as it sits now. Still have a couple of odds and ends to iron out, but this is how it sits now:

Yeah, at first I told him to just use his golf cart. But after getting it complete and riding it some, I really wouldn't mind having one of my own. People really like it and after they ride it they want one too.
