Default Where to attach when winching on truck??

Winching question???

Ok, I'm "moving on" from hauling my cart on a trailer to just putting it in the bed of my Silverado. So, I have installed a "special" bracket in the front of my truck bed that I attach a Clevis in order to spread the pull weight half on the truck, and half on the cart. (Well...the engineers tell me this....but what do I know ) Here's a pic of my truck bed bracket:

So, I use my cart winch to load up the cart....without me or anyone on the cart....and I have (up until today) been attaching the hook of the winch to the bottom of the cart's brush guard. See this pic below:

However, today as I was taking the cart off, the "bottom" part of the brush guard "snapped" (actually it bent and almost snapped off) off. So....knowing that my cart (that pic above is an older pic) in it's current form....with an Outback roll cage on it, where would be the "best place" to attach the winch hook to on the cart when I am going to winch said cart on and off the truck???

Dave

PS....give me some suggestions. No liability will I hold you to. Heck....Your guess is as good as mine. I was thinking of "clipping it" up on the roll cage???

NO NO and NO You will bend the cage, and if you think about the angle you will pull
at it will be harder to pull the cart. Find or fab something on the frame.

Pull the cable out on the winch on the cart and hook it to the bar you made in the back of the truck, and use the winch on the cart to pull it in the truck

Ok. I was thinking of that.....but then....my ideas on this engineering "stuff" are usually not the best. That's why I post stuff here. You see.....I'm a retired CPA.....numbers and tax law....yeah buddy!!!!.....electrical and engineering.....not so much!!

Thanks

Dave I agree with the other guys just hook winch to front of bed and let the winch do its work. But looking at your pics, Is that bracket just screwed in with self tapping or self drilling screws. If so I think I would put another flat bar piece of steel between the cab and bed and run bolts with nuts through both pieces of steel. I would hate to see you rip the front of your bed up. Just my thoughts.

yes it don't look like that bracket is strong enough to pull a 800 lb cart in the truck with out ripping it off the bed or bending the bed, why not just drive the cart in the truck

That is a 1\4" piece of steel that is bent on both ends to "wrap" on the inside of the corners if the side of the bed and run up the bed side about ten inches. In addition, this piece of steel is bolted on with the "other side" (between the bed and the truck cab) being a piece of 3\16" steel that, because of the center bend\hole in the bed, is cut into two pieces where one is on the left side and the other on the right. The bolts run thru the aluminum bracket, then thru the 1\4" piece of steel, then thru the truck bed, then thru the 3\16" piece of steel, and there are four bolts on each side of the center piece, plus one bolt on each of the "side" bracket bends. All bolted with flat washers and lock washers.

I honestly believe that the entire truck bed would rip off of the truck frame before something would happen to the top of the truck bed itself.

You have ask some good questions, but my B-I-L who is a Master Mack Mechanic had designed this hookup for me. He's pretty good at "over designing" this kind of stuff as he doesn't (nor do I) like the idea of a 1K-lb cart falling out while zooming down the highway.

Here's a better look of the piece of 1\4" piece of steel I'm talking about. The pic in my previous post...well, the sun kind of blocks out the entire view:

Sorry for my earlier post. from the new pics and your details you got the mount plate covered. Great job it was just hard to see how strong it really was in the first pic.
