Crackpot idea
Ok so I had an idea I want to build a bulldozer style set of tracks for a golf cart, 100% hydro static ran off of either a electric hydraulic pump, or gas powered system, set up to steer like the caterpillar tractors do, y'all thknk its possibe to do in a cart? I know there a lot of stuff involved but it would be unique

Re: Crackpot idea
You could run electric DC motors for drives too. They are good for variable-speed,high torque, and reversing as well. You can get more ground speed from them than a hydro-static setup as well. The controls will be more involved, but it would be neat at the same time. For the Hydro setup, you could get the valving from a zero-turn that has Hydrostatic-Drives(ExMark,others)or a skid-steer,then your valving would be set already. The tracks could get pricey, unless you use something common like Skid-Steer tracks, that fit over the tires, but make a drive system that doesn't need the tires(or use much smaller ones) and you could decrease the distance between the top and bottom run of the track, which would lengthen them considerably(Skid-Steers are very short axle-centers compared to carts). Most Skid-Steers use about a 22"-28" tall tire, stock carts are 18". Either way on the drives would be do-able,the tracks would make it unstoppable, and Very Cool Too!!Hope this helps.

That "Ripsaw" is tight! I think a tank drive golf cart would be really cool. Lots of work to get there though. If you are willing to put the effort and money into it, I say do it. There won't be one like it anywhere.

Re: Crackpot idea
electric was my first idea, but i got thinking that they hydraulic setup would be good for other accessories, i live on a farm and it would be neat to hook up to say a small disc and be able to lift it up and move it without having to get the tractor out, plus hydraulic plows are nice, ive been looking at stuff on surplus center, http://www.surpluscenter.com/Hydraulics/, and junked bobcats are fairly cheap around my area, and ive seen the ripsaw before, wicked awsome

Re: Crackpot idea
Bobcat/skid loader would be really heavy and wheel speed would be slow. But it would be strong!

Re: Crackpot idea
I would use the Skid-Steer components, but build an undercarriage that fits the cart, and build the track system into it.

I'm looking into a two speed new holland drive train, I used to run one at my old job and it would run upwards of 25 mph at full throttle, I'm sure with some tweaks it could go faster

Re: Crackpot idea
this could be one of those cream of the crop builds if done correctly.
much like the H-150 built i watched come together on a fullsizebronco.com forum. it got lots of attention and was all built by hand in the guys garage with basic(BASIC) tools. Amazing. I hope you do it and it works out. these guys here will give plenty of good advice |

It would be awhile before I could start it, just an idea right now, ive got two carts I'm working on, my 87 ezgo and a cushman of an unknown year, only thing I know about the cushman is that it was made just a couple months before they dropped the line and went to the trucksters
