I have not owned one, but have spent 9 years with Airgas welding supply house. I can tell you most of the non brand name welders are hard to find consumables for (tips, nozzles, electrodes) Be sure you can get these parts for it from your local welding supply.
I suggest sticking with a name brand machine, even if its a Hobart from Tractor supply.

Oddpowers is right about part availability. Some of the brands say a standard part will fit but it may or may not fit correctly. Try one of the Welder forums for reviews on different brands. I like name brand such as Lincoln, Miller, Hypertherm, etc.

Yep,and watch some of the Big-Box store units.A friend of mine bought a Lincoln welder from Home Depot about 10yrs ago.He asked me what i thought of a HD175,which I never heard of.He went to a local welding supply and the tips, nozzels, etc were not Lincoln, they were offshore stuff.Maybe this has changed, not sure.I would also recommend staying with name-brands.You do get what you pay for,and a good unit will last for longer than most would think, compared to a cheaper unit that may only last a few years.Buy it once, buy a slightly larger machine than u need (if u need a 1/4" cut plasma, buy a 3/8 or 1/2" unit)and forget about replacements down the road.Hope this helps.

Duramax,
If your looking for a cheap welder, take a look at the Northern Tool line-up. They have a 145 that runs (on sale) about $275-300. I had one of their 135's for 8 years before it died... great little 115V unit with gas shielding capability. While I use a Miller in the shop at home, these are great machines to learn to weld with. Portability is a plus too. As far as the plasma's go, I have a Northern 40A tig/plasma machine.

This works great for me... cant speak for others. Pachanga's right though, whatever you think you need, go one step bigger.

NOTE... stay away from the 115V plasma's, they're very disappointing.

I purchased the Tweco Fabricator 181. They had a mail in Helmet promotion and the Helmet that I received is very nice. I later purchased the foot pedal for better TIG control. The welder does TIG, MIG, & Stick and came with all the cables and consumables to do all three. I've only used the TIG function so far and am pleased with the results. Since the Brand is Tweco, I know there's consumables available at the local welding supply (Tweco makes a lot of torches for other welders). The price was $888.00 plus the foot pedal.

For my own liking, I try to stay away from machines that do too many things. Although it usually cost more I prefer to purchase pieces that do each thing separately so that when one does happen to have problems I only have to replace one.

But that's just my thoughts.

Again, I'll repeat as always said. When making a purchase for tooling or such, purchase the biggest/best you can, for no matter what you think will do the job you require, at some time down the road you'll find that you should have gone bigger.

I recently purchased a plasma cutter. I could have made due with one that could cut 1/4-3/8 or maybe even up too 1/2". But I found one that would cut 3/4" and sever 1" and the price wasn't bad (It's not a big name brand but does carry a good 5 year P/L warranty) and I have to say, I like being able to, if necessary, cut such thick metals.
