Default Replacement Body for 81 DS electric....

New forum member as well as just purchased my first cart. I’m retired and since I live in an urban area will be using it primarily for trips for groceries, supplies, neighborhood drives, etc.

Cart is an older (OLD) 81 DS electric, but most of its life has been off course and has been well maintained and in very good mechanical condition, with the exception that the body is a little rough.

I have been searching the local sources in the area, as well as researching on the internet, for a used body to replace the current one. Most of the bodies that I see are advertised as fitting “82 and up” models. Visually I can see no difference in the cowl/body on my ‘81 model; and those specified as fitting 82 and up models.

Does anyone have first hand experience or knowledge of replacing the body on an 81 model .... what, if any is the difference between an 81 cowl/body and an "82 and up" body .... or more specifically, will the “82 and up” body also fit my 81 without modification ??

I have the physical and mechanical ability to do the replacement ... just need the assurance that I purchase the proper cowl/body to fit my application.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

That's a good question. Can you post some pictures of the cart so we can see it and maybe spot some differences? I believe 81 was the first year for the DS, earlier carts were Caroches. In 1993 they went to a plastic body made from material called ArmorFlex. The 93 and up bodies will bolt on in place of the earlier fiberglass ones.

Not sure if this is true or not :
I heard that the newer and older bodies are interchangeable. However, pertaining to the rear body, the older fiberglass body carts did not have that metal support beam that is under the front of the rear cowl kind of where you knees would be while sitting down on newer club cars. This beam supports the front part of the newer Armorflex bodies from collapsing. The beam wasn't needed for the fiberglass ones because the fiberglass is strong enough to support the weight...

I would go to golfcartpartsdirect.com to check out the differences between what you have and the drawings 84+up.

My experience is the body fits fine but about 3/8ths inch of shim (washers) needed under the 2 front cowl mounts on the top side by the roof support hoop.

They make these when retrofitting a 93+ body on an 81-92 DS. They go where Scotty mentioned

Scotty, thanks for the reply ... not to be redundant, but does that also apply specifically to an 81 model ?? thanks

They are interchangeable. I have done them. The washers or part mentioned are needed.

Where are you located?
