Gears/ acceleration/ speed....

I see most of the faster carts are lifted and larger tires are being used. Being a car guy, I know the advantages in this case.. The problem I have is mine IS for golf and the wife is a foot shorter than me. A tall cart w/n be practical...

My cart is a 2010 Precedent with a D&D 9 hp motor. Acceleration is "decent" and I can run 26-27 on a flat road. Has anyone swapped the gears only and seen "reasonable" increase in speed? How much is the torque effected? I realize it w/b down..

I am sure a 500a controller would bring the torque back up.. Just trying to not go overboard.....

Well then do not lift the cart; you can go with 14" rims and low profile tires these tall tires will get you some extra speed but it will cost you some torque. If you have any rubbing issues then you lift no more than needed to gain clearance and/or go rims with different offset to avoid rubbing.

If your already able to go 26 to 27 MPH how much faster do you want to be able to run? My cart can run to at least 33 but I'm plum happy with being able to hold a solid steady 25 going up inclines.

The problem I see with installing high speed gears is they can really rob you of torque for the carry of extra large passengers and gear as well as hill or incline strength.

Switching to a larger controller and solenoid "should" be able to net you both speed and torque if properly programmed. Have you upgraded all of your cables to a larger size? 6 is generally stock to which 4 and 2 are your larger sized cables.

First, 14" rims do not fit on a Precedent.. Second, putting low profile tires on big rims on a cart, car or anything else irrelevant.. All goes to tire diameter... Simple math.....

I expect "some" torque loss. I am hoping someone has tried it and has personal knowledge.. I was wondering how much top end speed a set of after market gears would gain..

I would also be interested in gear recommendations....

fastbasser, in the "Quick Links" drop down menu right below your username and beside where you log out, there is a very accurate and nice speed calculator. From that you can figure out your rpms at top speed with your stock tires and gears (12.44:1) then plug in different gear ratios like 8:1 and 6:1 to see what speed increase youll get. As for torque, you'll highly likely need a larger controller as tall gears and a high speed motor together will fry your stock one soon.

I just found this btw...

Speed (mph) = (rpms of motor x radius of tire) / (gear ratio x 16

12.5: 1 Gear Ratio

12.857 mph = (3000 x 9) / (12.5 x 16 = (27,000 / 2,100)

8.0:1 Gear Ratio

20.089 mph = (3000 x 9) / (8 x 16 = (27,000 / 1,344)

I just hope you have a way to stop this thing. Anything above 25 mph is a little much for rear wheel brakes alone.

That is something I learned in short order after I got to the top of the tallest & steepest paved hill in our hood.... Working on the brackets needed to hang some Jake's calipers on my front end right now...

I'm surprised you guys feel 25 is fast. The "stock" EZGo RXV's sold around here run 25-26 all day long.. A set of gears will get them easy over 30 with decent torque.. Gotta love a AC motors..

Mine will run 28-29 down a slight grade.. I am able to pass most carts going up hill as well..
