2001 48v DS Regen Automatic Braking

I get the impression that the automatic braking system on my 2001 48 volt DS Regen is not working. Okay, my home golf course is pretty much as flat as you can get, so I can't check it on a downhill gradient but, if I whizz the buggy along at full speed and take my foot off the accelerator completely, it seems to carry on freewheeling with nothing slowing it down other than normal rolling resistance or me hitting the brake pedal.. I did take it away to a hilly course a couple of months ago and it would, I am sure, have carried on gathering speed on the downhills if I had not chickened out and hit the brake pedal. I do, however, feel a braking effect if I run the cart in reverse and take my foot off the accelerator.

Like I say, the automatic braking is not necessary on my home course but I'd be glad of it on some of the hilly couses I visit from time to time.

Other than trial and possibly fatal error on a downhill track, is there any way I can check if the regen brake is working?

Thanks for the response, Crash Test Dummy. The only previous owner of my buggy was one of the few Club Car main dealerships and official service agents here in the UK, so it is unlikely that they would have installed a non-Club Car genuine replacement part if the controller needed to be replaced. I'll check it out, though.

Regen would not work forward or reverse if that was the case....

Maybe the speed sensor is marginally good. When in forward, if you do the same pedal up test at a slower speed, does it do regen?

Thanks for your response, Sergio. No, I don't get any sensation of Regen braking at any speed going forwards. In reverse, it could be the drum brakes hanging on a bit, I suppose, rather than the Regen system. I must admit that I have not run the buggy any distance in reverse. I've only noticed it when manoeuvering the buggy in tight spaces.

Then the speed sensor may have failed completely, I think in 2001 the controller did not balk at the speed sensor not working.

Try the speed sensor test, turn the key switch off and push the cart by hand, if You don't get any resistance followed by the buzzer beeping, the speed sensor has failed.

Unfortunately with these Regen 1 / Regen 2 cars, a replacement speed sensor is not that common. When it dies, people usually just unplug them and run the car without it

If the sensor looks like the image attached and You are OK with a soldering iron,
You can by a new Allegro A1203LUA-T Hall-effect bipolar switch
for under $2 and fix it yourself.

Hi Sergio.

I finally got round to doing your suggested test on the speed sensor and discovered it is totally dead. I've priced up the official Club Car part here in the UK and it costs the equivalent of about $70 US.

I've also priced up the Allegro Hall-effect bipolar switch component that you suggested and, even with the cost of air-freight from the USA it only runs out to about $20 US, so I think I'll probably go for that option as I'm competent with a soldering iron.

Before I go ahead and order, could I get you to confirm that the part number you quoted in your post is the correct one for my buggy? The sensor on my buggy looks exactly like the one in the photo you posted. My buggy's Serial Number is AC0133-051079.
