Default Resistor diode burning

I have a a2001 club 48volt that all of a sudden would only go maybe 2 mph. Batteries and cables are new, smelled electric type burn and and popped open back panel where clubs normally set, removed cover and what looks like a resistor assy with a small diode in the middle is burned badly, I'm by no means a cart mechanic so I installed a new resistor assy and immediately burns out, any ideas where I need to start? Can you identify your drive system?

First what size resistor did you install and what wattage was it? Did you get it from a golf cart parts place or a electronics store?

The only reason the resistor will burn up is because the contactor (solenoid) is open. If the contactor was closed the resistor would be shorted out and no current would flow through it.

It's the thing that you attach the resistor to. You attach it to the two large terminals. Now that I take a second look at the resistor picture it appears that the ring terminals are too small to fit on the large terminals of the solenoid. Be sure you are connecting it correctly.

It should run without the resistor or diode connected. Check and hear if the solenoid clicks when you hit the go peddle. And if your cart has a run/tow switch be sure to put in tow before changing or connecting any wires.
