Precedent brake hub/drum removal

The left brake on my 06 Precedent is dragging/scraping, but not all the time. When I remove the tire/wheel and attempt to pull off the hub/drum to inspect, it will not come off. I am carefully using a screw driver and small tire tool to pry...and can get it to move out an 1/8-1/4", but it will not release (no, the brakes are not engaged!) The studs are straight and there is a small amount of play, but it just won't come off. What am I doing wrong?

Take a rubber mallet and hit the drum all around and in the center. Sounds like the slide is hanging and holding shoes against the drum. Also you can cut the pins on back side of backing plate with cut off wheel. This will allow shoes to move also.

The brake shoes don't touch 100% of the width of the drum surface when you brake.. Years and years of driving, or driving with worn brakes will wear the stopping surface so badly that it will develop a groove. Once the shoes sit down into that groove, you'll snag on the remaining un-worn part of the drum when trying to slide them off. You have to keep working at it with a large flat head screwdriver, prying on the brake drum while beating the crap out of it with a large metal hammer. You're probably going to break it and you're going to need a drum, but you need one regardless if this is the case.

Thanks for the understandable information, Dawg! That sounds very possible. If I don't break the drum, can it be turned by a mechanic friend of mine who turns auto/truck drums and rotors?

I wouldn't advise it... At this point it's so thin there's not much metal left.
