Default Club Car not charging

Havent posted in a long time. I have a 2001 Club Car with a Power Drive 1 charger. When I go to charge my 48v 875 trojans batteries the charger hums but nothing else. I do have 50v across the pack. ive ck'ed all the wires associated with the charging system in the cart for resistance and everying is ok. I checked the receptacle fuse and the grey wire sensor fuse and they are ok. The receptacle is ok. I brought in another charger from a friend and that charger does the same thing (charger is a Power Drive 2) hums only. By reading some post I disconnect the sensor wire and hooked up a wire from the fuse and the negative post and still no reading on the charger just hums. I have not tried to jump the 2 wires in the charger yet.. I opened charger and it looks a little different then I remembered the post on the 2 wires I need to jumper. Ive had similar problems in the past and all were resolved by cleaning some of my wires where some were clogged with green stuff. Not this time I clean all relavent wires and still charger just hums. I tried to reset OBC and still just hums. I dont think I have a tow switch so bypassed that step. Any other ideas i can check?

Since two chargers exhibit the same behavior, the problem more than likely lies in the cart. Hopefully the OBC hasn't died, I'm afraid it might have...

By jumping a wire from the sensor fuse to the pack negative post and nothing changes.. charger still hums be a problem with the obc? one question -- my black wire from the negative pack post goes into the OBC but come right out and goes to another area outside the OBC.. Is that correct?

Check to make sure the red wire from charge reciptial it connected to main pack pos. if you had green build up on the post the cables need to come completely off to clean the stuff off the cables and the post under where the cable connect. You very well may have a cable end that just looks connected but is loose. You should be able to pull on the cable hard enough to lift the battery and then some without the end pulling off.

I did check for continuity from where you plug in the charger to the postive post of the battery. Its ok. It seems thats where the green stuff builds up in the past. Actually the end of that wire I cut and stripped it back and is just wrapped around the postive post of the battery. I cut about 3 inches off that wire and didnt have another connector so just stripped it.

Any bad connections should definitely be fixed, but from your description of the symptoms, the positive side of the charger circuit is fine.

When You plug the charger DC cord into the receptacle, current flows from the battery positive wire connection, through the charger relay coil inside the charger and through the gray sense wire to negative.

The charger relay clicking and charger humming means all of that part of the circuit is fine.

Since You tried 2 chargers with same result, we can leave off charger side problems like rectifier, Amp meter, etc...

The charger current then goes from receptacle 10ga black wire through the OBC SCR to the controller B-.

That is how the OBC controls the charging current.

Since You have already reset the OBC, check to make sure the negative connection from receptacle to OBC and from OBC to controller B- are good.

Next you can by-pass the OBC current control to make sure You get a charge on the batteries.

Run a 10ga wire from the receptacle negative pin directly to pack negative.

Keep an eye on the pack voltage and disconnect the charger at 60v.

If that works, look for using a different charger rather then buying a new OBC.

Hello Sergio -- I just went over an verified my charger is good by using my charger in another cart and it works fine. Now couple things.. you want me to put a 10 gauge wire from my receptacle plug negative pin to the neg pack post. Is that correct? Then plug in my charger w/o it being connected to the cart itself? I dont worry about the sensor gray wire fuse? Sensor Fuse can be hooked up? I do worry about all the green junk that I probably let go to long.. as I was saying before.. In the past I had similar problems and all were corrected by me cleaning post and wires. One more thing about black neg wire from post to OBC.. I havent really opened the OBC. The Black neg wire seems just to pass thru the OBC and then is connected to the speed control or something like that I checked continuaty from the neg pack post to the speed control where the black wire is connected and it has a reading on the olms meter. Is the black neg post large wire connected in the OBC? I move it from outside of OBC and seem to move very easy as if it is just passing thru that area w/o being connected anywhere.....

The 6ga battery cable (pack negative) goes through the OBC without connecting to it.

On the back of the OBC, there is an epoxied opening with 2 black 10ga cables and 1 gray sense wire.

The OBC controls the current coming from the charger socket 10ga wire before it goes to controller B- on the other 10ga black wire..

To completely by-pass the OBC, jump both the sense wire and the negative wires from the back of the charger receptacle directly to the pack negative battery post.

Plug the charger AC plug in.

Plug the charger DC plug in.

The charger should start, stop it manually once pack voltage is 60v.

OK after jumping both sense wires and the negative wire from receptacle my charger is now pegged out to the very top of guage. Which means i have something wrong in the OBC.. Is it worth opening up the cover on the OBC to check anything inside before buying a DPI charger? IM sure my Power Drive Charger is worth something if I sell it... thanks for all the help

The OBC is maintenance proof.

Due to the high cost of a new OBC, the consensus I see in the forum is to replace the charging system with a DPI charger.
