Wheel stud issue
Installed a 6" lift on my cart last night and one wheel stud on the rear passenger side had to be cut off. I suspect it was already stripped but anyhow....the splined shoulder was gone and spun freely in the back of the axle. The splined part of the axle is stripped as well.
Do they make a sleeve that can repair this issue or can I get a new stud and tack weld it onto the axle? Or am I looking at getting a new axle...? Thanks |

Re: Wheel stud issue
Well I would remove the axle take a center punch as close to the hole as possible all the way around the hole use the center punch and make divits on both sides that should spread the metal enough to hold the stud.

Re: Wheel stud issue
Buy a new stud,it should cut its own splines, unless the hole is really messed up.I buy them thru auto parts stores,Dorman makes a ton of sizes and you can find almost the exact one you need in most cases. For this problem with the hole, that would allow you to find an oversize-shank stud.Keep in mind though,a stud .002" larger than the hole is a press-fit,so don't go crazy trying to beat something together.Dorman has their wheel-stud lists online too.Hope this helps.

Re: Wheel stud issue
When all else fails tack weld the new stud's head in a few places on the back of the axle flange.

Thanks guys...didn't think of the peening method...may try that and tack weld as a last resort.
How safe is it to ride the cart now? Not off road crazy and all that but the kids are about to drive me nuts to ride it!! Lol |

Re: Wheel stud issue
With three lug nuts holding, you should be OK, just keep a close eye on it and don't be doing any Dukes of Hazzard stuff.
The new stud will press right in, your axle is likely just fine. To put it in, slide it through, stack a few washers over it, and thread the lug nut on taper OUT. Tighten it (impact gun works miracles here) and it'll suck the stud right into place. |

Righton, so is the axle not splined also?
I'll definitely try it out before completely pulling axle and peening or tack welding... I think I can get it in without pulling axle again... |

You should be able to get the new stud in without pulling the axle, it takes a little wiggling but I've done it. |
