97 DS - metal grinding from rear end when rolling
97 DS 48 Volt:
Grinding noise from rear end when rolling. Can only hear when slow speed, as higher speed and road noise drown it out. I am pretty sure not brakes. Assuming either an axle bearing or the motor itself. Someone suggested the guide ring from the motor spline to the transaxle. Any help anyone? thank you in advance. |

I would bet the guide ring is worn. I think it's a common problem on these older DSs.

Does it go away when you accelerate? Does it only occur when coasting? If so, most likely the guide ring.

Re: the grinding going away when accelerating - I am sure it is grinding, but with the rpms and the tire driving noise, it is indiscernible at higher speeds. Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thank you |

Follow up on the grinding -
Is there a chance there are any other axle bearings it could be, or is the guide ring the most likely? Just curious if you think I should tear the transaxle apart since I am already removing the motor? thank you |

Re: 97 DS - metal grinding from rear end when rolling
I would try the guide ring first, as it is the cheapest and easiest fix. If this fixes the issue, you're good to go, if not then it might be time to have a look at some axle bearings.

Those guide rings can make tons of noise when they wear out.
