So I bought a 2012 Precedent IQ from a Club Car dealer a few months ago. Been pretty happy with it. The dealer sent out a few techs to my house today to replace the shocks at their expense (the cart rattled quite a bit when going over bumps and was pretty bouncy). Cart has no lift kit - standard suspension and tires. They came out and looked at it and confirmed that they needed replacement. They finished it, it drove great, so I parked it in the garage.

For a fair up charge, I also decided to buy a DPI charger. I hooked it up and when I went back into the garage shortly after, I smelled a burning electrical smell. I unhooked the charger, put the key in the cart and no go - forward or reverse. I put the cart in "Tow", took off the Parking Brake, and pushed it into the driveway. Really stiff and even though I switched it to Tow, it buzzes once I start pushing it. Any ideas? I called the dealer and they are going to come pick it up.

Was this the first time you charged the cart with the DPI charger? Was it a smart charger with float charge or a direct replacement type?

How would I know if it was a smart charger? It looks like the same basic design as the older Powerdrive 3 I had. It only has a basic analog amps gauge like the Powerdrive 3 - no lights or extra indicators. The cart is stock as far as electronics goes.

Now that I think about it, it actually charged fine for about an hour. I unplugged it when it was done to take it for another test drive but got distracted and couldn't go so I just plugged it back in without moving the cart like I was doing an equalization charge a few minutes later. Could that be it? They said it would function exactly like my old charger. Thx.

Not sure what happened but didn't sound good. You will need to first do a through visual inspection to see what burned up and then report back.

Interrupting the charge cycle and replugging the charger would not cause a problem.

Do you have a picture of the charger in question? If it is not part of the Accusense line of DPI chargers, then it doesn't bypass the OBC

It does not appear to be the Accusense model but it does call them a "smart charger". The company website advertises them as DPI Powerforce? See below pics. It's got a Mad Jax sticker but I did not purchase it from them. Thanks for all the help.

That is the one that utilizes the OBC and doesn't bypass it

So is it the wrong kind of charger? If so, what did I likely damage? The silver box under the seat with the Run/Tow switch on it was warm for hours before I finally unhooked the Positive terminal from the #1 battery and the Negative terminal from the #6 battery.

It is the wrong kind of charger if you thought it was an upgrade. That "Power Supply" is the same as the OEM Powerdrive 3.

You may want to verify it is correctly setup for a Club Car with OBC.

If You just plug the AC cord, the charger should not power up.

Once you plug the DC cord, the charger should cycle like the OEM: pause-ON-pause-OFF-pause-ON.
