Default The Challenge OBC vrs. DPI

Well here It is the challenge OBC vrs. DPI!

On one hand the OBC, it calculates how much discharge and charges accordingly, along with some enhanced programming. It was around for a long time and has worked well. Then people starting modifying carts and in the process burned them up, bypassed partially in order to use larger cables, added the pass through stud etc. The outcome was to get it to function as it did stock, keeping your batteries optimally charged.

DPI says hold up now, we have this fancy charger that we feel can preform as well or even out do the factory OBC/charger system that worked for many years.

So really can the DPI calculate how much to charge the batteries correctly and thus replace the OBC and will you get the life out of them as with the OBC?

Ok I know Club eventually did away with the OBC in the newer carts but is this really the best option to get the most out of your batteries? Has anyone side by side tested apples to apples comparison? How many years would it take to actually do this test right?

For openers I would like to challenge this statement.

A charger doesn't need to know how many amps were taken out of a battery in order to charge it.

Another thing was that the CC charger was constantly over charging the batteries. Sometimes getting the charge voltage up to 63 volts.

It's old technology let it die.

The DPi charger charges the batteries in a 5 stage algorithm opposed to the 3 stage CC charger.
The DPI charger charges the batteries until they stop taking amperage. This is the best charge method as the batteries tell the charger when they are done - not some measure of calculated draw and replenish system.
Lastly the DPI goes into a float mode when the charge cycle is complete - holding the battery pack in a slightly elevated state of charge so that the the pack will always be 105% ready to go and can not self discharge and sulfate ...... as CC realized for the OBC it's game over

I never understood how the OBC was supposed to help the battery charging process. There are just too many variables to keep up with.

You think!? I guess Club Car finally admitted it was a failure after 10 years Like Ezgo and the Reed switch...

In all fairness the OBC charger was top of the line at one time. But with new advances in solar charge controllers and EV chargers a lot of things are changing. Just like soon Lead Acid Batteries will be a thing of the past along with DC motors.

I keep forgetting to check when I get back to the house but I get a kick that my batteries show better than 100 % voltage after a brisk 1.2 mile hilly run and a short rest period with the DPI charger....

So, I'm about to have to buy 2 chargers. Should I buy the DPI that's made for the obc or the one that says without obc and bypass the obc?

Face it - the OBC was a bad idea.

Engineers took a $100 part out of the charger and made it a $250 integral part of the cart.

I'm glad to know it's gone. Good riddance

PS. Lots of poor technology was once top of the line stuff.
corded wall phones
Tube TVs
Hell, Tube radios
Edsels and more. Doesn't make em good
