Default Erratic Steering Stock 2010 Precedent

Good Day All - Hoping you can shed some light on why my 2010 Precedent drives like it is possessed. It viciously follows every hump, curve, rut and dip in the road. Sometimes, the force will rip the wheel out of your hands if you are not paying attention. The cart is a bone stock 2010 i2 Excel (serial number PH) ex-golf fleet vehicle with Speed Code 3.

It had unevenly worn tires so I replaced them with no improvement. Toe in is about 1/16th - 1/8th" as best as I can measure. I've read that worn bushings are a common problem but mine feel solid. I cannot detect any noticeable play in them. My immediate goal is to take this cart to Speed Code 4 but I am scared out of my wits that she'll toss me if I ignore this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like front end alignment. Photos of front end will help.

The steering/suspension on the Precedents at my golf course have been very susceptible to "curb-banging" misuse. What you are describing (darts left & right without warning) could very well be a bent spindle (but very hard to see the actual bend). First you will have to reset your toe-in regardless. And after you adjust toe-in to spec, check to see if the cart over steers or rubs a tire in one direction vs the other. If it does - then you'll need to replace the damaged spindle.

Greg, A few pics would help. I agree with others about alignment. Tell us how you are measuring your toe. You need to do it with the wheels on the ground and the cart weight on them. I jack up one side and spin the tire and use a Sharpie to mark the face of the tire while it is spinning. Do the same for the other side. Let the cart down and take your measurements from those lines. I also have a 2010 PH serial Excel cart and it drives great.

OMT, When you changed the tires did you change the wheels? Bent wheel??

Check the front leaf spring and make sure that isn't bent.

Sounds like the classic symptoms of a bent spindle. The problem with the Precedent spindles is that they can bend very little and cause a huge problem. Sometimes they'll bend so slightly that you can't even see it by eye. The easiest way to diagnose the problem is to put the steering wheel at 12 o clock, park the vehicle, get out and look directly at the front end. The side with the bent spindle will have the tire either kicked outward or inward, depending on the direction of the bend. You'll need to do this before you attempt to correct the problem via a front end alignment. With a bent spindle, it's still possible to achieve the correct toe setting while driving straight, but when you turn the alignment will change if the spindle is bent. One side will steer quicker than the other and will pull that tire more and more out of alignment during the turn. Take some pictures if you can and we will see if we can help you.

Thank you all for the quick replies. I swapped the tires around and no change. I did not see an obvious signs of impact anywhere but that does not mean it isn't the cause. Toe was originally measured by placing a carpenter's square against the leading and trailing edges of each tire/rim and marking spots on the garage floor. I just checked it again and it seems to be about -.125" which is about what I measured before. However, just because I came up with the same number twice does not mean I'm right.

Those pictures are too close for me to tell anything. Back up about 10 feet and take one of the front of the car.... However, I see two problems. 1. The hub on the driver's side looks like the bearing may have exploded and fallen apart. That needs to be fixed. I'd inspect the other one while I was at it. 2. The tow bar on the front of it. Unless you're using it, remove it. They drive so much better without them.

Thanks! I will post a newer photo tomorrow. BTW, what do I need to remove the tow bar? It looks integral to the steering?

Just a set of wrenches. It's bolted to the leaf spring retaining plate and the spindle. just take it loose.
