Default What makes a batt. blow up?

My cousin has a stock 96CCDS48V, he said it had been left charging for a couple of days and pop! Water level in batts. is assumed to be correct, batts. 5-6 yrs old, cables were corroded a little...would this be bad maintenance or possiblly the obc not shutting off the charger. I can only guess...what do you guys think?

At 5 to 6 yrs old one battery could be bad or have a dead cell which wouldn't come up and obc would correctly not tell the charger to shut off. A good batt could then be cooked to the point of extreeme heat......resulting in POP

Scottyb,
Thanks, I guess I may be a little smarter than I thought...that is exactly what I said to him. So, try new batts, clean all connections and monitor charger closely? He already replaced the batt. with a used one, but I told him to be safe he's due for new batts. anyway. My obc in 13yrs old, so I think you're right!

The one that blew up may not be the bad one, if my theory is correct. Someone needs to check the specific gravity of all battery cells and watch for excessive charge times, etc.

Ok, dumb it down for me. Couldn't he just put a volt meter on each batt. and see what they're reading. If they're all close, bad batt. is probably blown and gone, if not this would still identify bad cell or batt...right?

A perfectly good battery taking a charge would have gotten alot hotter than one not taking a charge! .......I am concerned that the bad battery may still be in the pack....a voltmeter will get you close but a hydrometer will analyze each cell......one bad cell can drag a pack down to where the charger will not turn off. Be careful that it doesn't over charge again.....also if it did charge for 2 days, it is likely that some heat damage has occurred to the other batteries as well.....If he insists on just winging this....I suggest running it down to a known voltage of 49 and then monitor the charge time and battery temperatures. Say 5-6 hours safely never more than warm to the touch on the side of the batteries...
This is really a job for a load or hydrology test

For under 20 dollars jc whitny has a battery filler and hydrometer. I think anyone with an electric cart should own both for safety and to save their batteries.
