07 Precedent Cable Upgrade
Onto my first major project on the cart.....getting this out of the way to help with future upgrades.
From reading previous forums - I believe I have everything I need. Will go 2gauge and would like to replace everything. I believe I need to upgrade the battery series cables, the controller cables, and the motor cables. I do have a couple questions before I get too far into this: 1. Should I match the length of the factory cables? They seem a little long between the batteries. Need to be? Or should I shorten up? 2. Do I need to remove any panels to make this easier? Or in everything accessible under seat and under cart? 3. Anyone have a pdf or picture of everything needing changed from 6g to 2g in case I get lost halfway through? Thanks guys - great site. |

Re: 07 Precedent Cable Upgrade
Be sure to put cart in TOW before you start. I made my new cables only the length needed to reach. Not stretched just long enough to allow for routing and to keep them away from battery caps. I wound up with about 3 feet less cable. Shorter is less loss of voltage and current flow. I don't think any of us could tell the difference, but it makes me feel better. don't forget to run the main pack neg through the OBC.

Re: 07 Precedent Cable Upgrade
You do not "NEED" to match the length they can be shorter or longer as you see fit; just keep in mind that too short will always be too short.... Whereas too long can be re-routed and/or shortened....
Take a pic with your phone as well as make a crude drawing of where all the cables go; but never remove more than one cable at a time... Also be sure that if your cart has a RUN/TOW switch that you switch it to TOW BEFORE you start working on your cables... |

Re: 07 Precedent Cable Upgrade
Also check to make sure your new cable will FIT Though THE OBC!!!!!
IF not you need Carts Unlimited Cable stud kit! Or you can make your own. |

Re: 07 Precedent Cable Upgrade
YES good point as while 4 will usally fit through the OBC port there is very little chance that 2 gauge will fit through; and for proper charging with an OBC it needs to see all current used or it can short charge the batteries. A kit is avil from Scotty B here or you can roll your own from a 5/16" brass toilet bowl mounting bolt....

Re: 07 Precedent Cable Upgrade
I've seen the Scotty Special for the OBC connection. Looks easy enough.
Is 2gauge overkill? Will 4gauge suffice? Or does it not really matter? |

Re: 07 Precedent Cable Upgrade
If you use 2 ga cables you may want to fit them before you cut. They will not be as flexible as the ones you have now, so a little room will be needed for turns.

Re: 07 Precedent Cable Upgrade
You will also need (2) 5/16 ring connectors for 10ga wire.
The existing positive 6ga that goes to the solenoid as well as the existing 6ga pack negative connection at the controller have additional 10ga wires on a "combo" crimp. You will have to re-terminate those 10ga wires with new 5/16 ring connectors. The 2ga cable is mostly overkill for Sepex motors unless you are planning for some serious upgrades in controller/motor. Also, if You are considering a HD solenoid, You may want to buy it now since they normally have 3/8 stud connections instead of the stock 5/16. |

Re: 07 Precedent Cable Upgrade
Thanks guys. I work at a cable manufacturer....so cable is easy. I'll try the 4gauge.
Sergio - thanks for reminding me about the combo crimps - I remember seeing those. |

Re: 07 Precedent Cable Upgrade
Depending on what cable you buy, 2 ga in some cases will fit through the obc. I used royal/excelene 2 ga. Welding cable and with a little vasiline it went through fine.
