Default Street Legal in Georgia

Just heard on the news about Georgia's plan to raise revenue for roads. They mentioned a $200 fee for electric vehicles. Was wondering if that would apply to street legal carts? Anybody heard?

I have not heard that news

But the gated community that I live in (which has a 35 mph speed limit) started enforcing a no unregistered vehicle allowed on streets rule last week Now I have to drive my truck a 1/4 mile to the golf course and take up a parking space, because I don't live on the golf course

I am very unhappy and if I can find a community in south Georgia or north Florida, I am ready to sell this place and move disgust:

I checked some of the city registration regulations in Ga. online that do allow golf carts and the fees ranged from $12 - $15 for a five year permit, depending on the city

So... couldn't you just register your cart somewhere that issues a cart license plate? That would make you legal in your own gated community.

For example... since my cart has a license plate and insurance, I should be able to drive it there while visiting because it IS a registered vehicle.

No, as this gated community receives no state or county funds for roads, the POA board makes the rules. Golf carts can be permitted in 28 counties in Georgia, at present. If I resided 8 miles from here in the city limited of Carrollton, I could permit my cart

jj- My wife did hear the news report and because electric cars use the roads but do not purchase gas, they pay no fuel tax for road maintenance

I don't think this will apply to golf carts that can not use main roads

I'm originally from Brunswick just south of Savannah and have been looking around that area to move back south Just haven't found a community, other than Shellmans Bluff and Jekyll Island that allows golf carts

Shellmans Bluff is a little to far away from everything and Jekyll Island is state owned and pricey

Want to be close to Saint Simons Island as my youngest son and daughter-in-law live there and are expecting to deliver their first child and my second grandson in October

I think some people in this thread are confusing golf carts and Low Speed Vehicles. Georgia allows both. Golf carts got specific areas to travel. LSV's are licensed street legal vehicles and can go on any road 35mph and under. And I would suspect that HOA's can't outlaw them. BTW I hate HOA's.
