Default water came out of batteries and orange light

hi everyone, as you know I am new. hopefully somebody can help me out.
I just bought a club car electric cart. ser# A9605-485460. it has six batteries in it. the person I bought it from said it worked on and off and would not hold charge. they were always charging it and it would stop working not long after taking it off of the charger. here is what I found.

I have cleaned all the terminals which were rusted and corroded. some of the cables had the medal rusted off and are now just copper wire. I am going to go and get one new pos. cable and 4 new black cables. the pos. cable was not bolted down secure it was loose.

1. could the loose and corroded cables cause the batteries not to charge correctly?
2. I inspected the batteries and they are all bulged out a little on the sides. are they supposed to be bulged out. they are all bulged out the same. (batteries are Trojan T-875 mileage master. batteries are about 7 years old.
3. some of the batteries do not have any visible water in them. the cells are wet but I do not see any water. do I just put in distilled water?
4. all batteries leaked out the top and out the sides where the top and side are put together. it seems like the acid ate the medal on the cables and rusted the battery hold down bolts.
5. is their a way to test the charger? the person said that they think it malfunctions or does not charge correctly. when the charger get plugged into the cart their is no humming but if you tap on the charger or pick it up and tap the whole thing on the ground it starts to hum.
6. their is an orange light on the dash to the left of the key. it stays on for about 1 min. then goes off. it comes on it I turn key off, turn the key on, and hit the gas or brake.

what are the possible problems. the person said before the new batteries were installed their was no problem with the cart. is their a short somewhere? where do I look
thank you
mike

Hi tbird86, welcome to BGW.

I am going to answer at least a few of your questions. Most all of them can be answered by reading and searching the forum.

1, good cables are absolutely required to charge and drive correctly, at this point you need a new set. Order a set from ScottyB at cartsunlimited.net

2, 7 year old bulged out batteries are dead. You might revive them for a bit, but you will never get good runtime.

3, distilled water is the only thing that should ever go in you batteries.

4, Bad batteries leak.

5, most chargers are repairable, hard to test them without cables and good batteries.

6, this light even when working as intended is of little use or concern.

Hope that helps some.

When batteries start to die they sulfate, its a layer of non productive junk that forms on the lead plates and makes the batteries useless. When it gets thick enough the sides bulge out.
