Default Batteries not charging fully

I have a 1998 club car ds 48v. We just replaced the batteries a few months ago with brand new crowns (six 8v) and I installed a light kit and voltage reducer, and Scottys state of charge indicator. Based on that indicator (I dont have a multimeter) the last 2 charge cycles have left the batts st ~49.7v. The 2 charges before these past two, the first was another low reading, checked water levels and added some water, charged again and it was back up to 50.8. Like I've said, since that both charges have been low. I know I need a multimeter and I can get out barrow one for testing but what could be the issue? I read where maybe a diode in the charger? Any help is appreciated

Know anybody with a Club Car that has the right plug that will let you use their charger? It's the quickest way to find out if you have a charger problem...that being said if your last set of batteries were going bad the charger does work much harder to try to keep the batteries charged and a bad diode is a likely issue...if you have a good multimeter most have a diode check function or you can just look for any diode that is showing signs of discoloration as a sign of high heat and possible failure....most chargers the diodes come in an assembly of three negatives and another assembly of three positives. Should be straight forward.

Since you have a meter in the cart, plug the charger in and let it charge for 8-9 hours and see what the on charge voltage reading is. Post what that number is and that will tell you what direction to go in as far as if it is properly charging

I thought about that but I wasnt sure if turning the key on would hurt something while its charging. The meter is on the switched side of the key

It will be fine. Hopefully it is a very accurate gauge

The digital meter I use is accurate to .1 and in the battery world that's what you are looking for. Some of the cheap meters are off by 1-3 volts- not good

Here is a method to check to see if it is your batteries or charger. If it appears that your batteries charge to quickly that is a sign of a bad battery. To check drive your cart for about 10-15 miles. Plug your charger in and if the charge current drops to about 5 amps quickly (in less than one hour) you probably have a bad battery. Or if you can't get 10-15 miles out of a charge you got a bad battery. If your charger goes to 15 amps and stays there for I'd say at least 2 hours probably more the charger is good. One more thing does your battery indicator light flash when you unplug the charger cable? One last bit of advise. Get a voltmeter. They are cheap at Lowes or Home Depot. Check the batteries individually and get the bad one replaced under warranty.

I noticed the orange light came on one time. I can't remember now I'd it was when I unplugged out or not. I'll drive it around a bit today and tomorrow and plug it in and see what my SOC meter says after awhile on the charger. Then ill try to barrow someone else's charger for the next time and see what happens then. I've been trying to break in the new batts so I've been letting it hey down to 70% but a full charge the party couple times is already at ~80% so I fear the break in is not going to be very successful :(

Well I plugged her in today about 2 hours ago. My meter showed the batts at roughly 70%. Charger jumped up all the way on the amp gauge. Now, I turned the key on and its reading 60.3v I think it said. The charging amps were at 5. Seem normal so far?
