Default CC DS- a lot of play in steering

I am bringing to life a 1983 CC DS and there is a ton of play in the steering wheel. I can turn the wheel a quarter of a revolution before the wheels actually turn. Any pointers on how to tighten that up or what part I need to see about replacing?

The 1983 DS gearbox is not longer made there is a upgrade kit available from Club Car dealers. It is a rack and pinion system and greatly improves steering. Last time I bought one is was around $200.00 about 2 hours to install.
