OBC stands for "On Board Computer". It is what controls the charging system on club cars.

It looks like the attached picture on the older models. The negative wire from the pack negative goes through there before it connects to the controller B- terminal.

Thanks. Please forgive my ignorance But I would rather ask a stupid question and get straightened out then actually doing something stupid.

The previous owner has the converter wired straight to the battery terminals so I thought that was okay.

I never heard of anyone that was born knowing everything, certainly not me, and I also share your motto on asking questions.

You will be surprised how many folks wire things around the OBC and then blame the OBC for not charging right.

The way club car designed that system, it needs to measure all current in and out of the batteries for optimal operation.

So, if I understand this system, the charger "talks" to the OBC and gets data as to how much juice was used since the last time the charger was plugged in. That is how the charger determines how much to recharge. If the headlights are running straight off the batteries, they are drawing power that the computer doesn't see... therefore, the current wiring is slowly killing the batteries.

Correct, except that the "charger" is really just a power supply, it is always full ON.

The OBC turns it ON/OFF and also throttles the current.

It is kind of an overkill just for a charging system, but it was originally designed to provide a SOC (State of Charge) status of the batteries for Golf Clubs.

It works on the same principle your laptop does when it shows you the "capacity remaining" on the battery (technically called Coulomb counting). It is far more precise than just reading battery voltages due to the amount of time it takes for the battery voltage to stabilize after a load is applied and removed.

Anyway, it is a pretty good system when not altered.
