brake drum swap
I've picked up pieces from some threads and done a search.
When lifting the cart 6" in the rear. I have gotten the idea that you can swap the brake drums left to right and turn them upside down to give higher clearance on the cables. Is this correct? and is there anything to it? |

Re: brake drum swap
I've read about that somewhere before also...
I can't remember when, or what forum, but, I do remember that it worked! In order to remove the back plates, you'll have to remove the axles, In turn... you'll have to tear into the transaxle. If you have the time, your mechanically inclined, and you have service manuals to show how to disassemble and reassemble the transaxle, it may work for you. Without all of those things... I wouldn't suggest it! With all of those things... you might as well put in high speed gears! |

Re: brake drum swap
Don't they make longer cables? Seems like that would be simpler

Re: brake drum swap
I agree...
But, I think the concern is still the cable to ground clearance, in the event of having the cables "snag" on something... (and, if there was that chance... he'd be rolling over something too big, and would probably get stuck anyways!) with longer cables, the clearance won't change... except you may be able to tie them up, out of the way! IMO... it sounds like a PIA... but not bad ideas, either way! |

Re: brake drum swap
I need clearance, or less oppertunity for something to snag the brake cable. My primary use will be in the woods.
I'm not as worried about something big as it would just slide over. I'm concerned about something getting inbetween it and the cart and getting hung in there. high speed gears would be nice but not in the budget. As long as I can get 20 or better I'll be satisfied I suppose, and the cart should do that once its running right. Besides I will probably need more torque than speed. |

Re: brake drum swap
Swapping those backer plates is not that hard to do. 4 bolts hold them on, you have to remove the axles first. A manual showing the breakdown of components is a handy thing to have.

Re: brake drum swap
I'm new to carting and have not had drums off yet but i made a sketch and the cables would come out forward on top. My concern is are cart break shoes self actuating like car shoes? The drums will be rotating the other way.

Re: brake drum swap
If I flip the brakes will they still be self adjusting?
I did wind up having some trouble with getting snagged. Once it concerned me that I came close to tearing the cable out. |
