Battery EXPLODED
Hey guys,
I had a battery explode yesterday! We have a 2005 CC with batteries dated C-12. The batteries were dead when I got the cart and I was able to resurrect them without issues until Monday evening. We had been driving around both Sunday and Monday without issues. We decided to head to the local Stop & Shop for some adult beverages Monday evening, about 2/10's of a mile from the house. As we were leaving the store the cart "stalled" on me and when I hit the GO pedal I could hear a click, the cart would roll about 1 foot then die again. We pushed it out of the way and I looked under the cart for loose motor connection or anything that would cause issues. We got back it, put it in reverse, hit the pedal and BAM! The battery exploded like a .38 shot. I'm wondering #1 what happened? #2 can I replace just that battery? I know I should replace them all but budget wise one is better than 6. #3 how important is it to get the same rating on the battery as the others? Will it hurt anything to have a different rating than the others? #4 all the other batteries are at 8.6v and seem to be fine......will there's explode? Any help is greatly appreciated! Re: Battery EXPLODED
The good part is that it didn't explode in your face and eyes. Can't tell you why it exploded but batteries produce hydrogen gas and my guess would be that one of your terminals sparked setting it off.

Re: Battery EXPLODED
Wow. Well, right now, you may have more problems than just your battery. I'd throw another battery in there just for troubleshooting. If it work, then you will have to decide whether or not to just keep going with just that one replacement (some inherent risk with that. hopefully others will chime in...)..
If it doesn't work with the one battery replacement, you will have some troubleshooting to do. If this is the last/first battery in the pack, it may have damages something else when it exploded... Best of luck!!! |

Re: Battery EXPLODED
You may have got those batteries working from being dead but they are damaged. This one failed on you and created an internal spark - bang! Charging creates enough hydrogen to blow the case apart like that. Yes you can try replacing one but you are probably much better off buying a set.

Re: Battery EXPLODED
Check you water levels in the un-exploded batteries. This looks like excessive gassing and low water level type boom.
That one really went BOOM! |

Re: Battery EXPLODED
You might get by with a used battery of the same rating for a while, but you might get more BOOMs.

Re: Battery EXPLODED
It is true that most of the time there is a Boom, there was also low water level in that cell.

Re: Battery EXPLODED
First get those puppies out of the cart. Cover your electrics and wash everything off then treat with bacon soda and water. Clean and dry good. Put in new set of batteries. Should cure a lot of problems.
