Question digital meter?

I have two golf carts. Mine is an old series CC DS and my wife's is a regen Yamaha. We both have analogue battery meters but realize that the meters do not provide much information as far as accuracy of measurement of charge. So, I ordered two digital meters. I plan on leaving the analogue meters attached, and install the digital meters also.

Question:
The analogue meters are installed directly to the battery pack so they are on even when the ignition key is turned off. I think I know the answer but will ask it anyway. Should the digital meter be installed at the key so that it is off when the cart is not being used, or does it draw low enough power from the batteries that I can install it directly?

I have mine installed to be on all the time. I like being able to walk by and see the voltage.

The LED meter will draw something in the neighborhood of 50-60 mila-amps. That is not even noticeable on the pack. So yes, connect it up directly if you like.

The digital meter I installed only had two leads. Its gets its power from the voltage being measured. No need for the enable wire.

These are listed as self powering meters

Thanks for the responses. I was inclined to hook the digital up same as the analogue meter, direct. Just wanted to get you experts to chime in with your opinions. Better to have a concurrence on the process, rather than go off half cocked. Thanks folks.

If it's the lesser expensive Chinese digital led meter, leaving it on all the time will lead to a shorter lifespan. There is no fixed formulation to determine lifespan, but the ones I did powered at all times seemed to die in a month or two in about 50% of the installs. The ones done with the ignition I have to date never had a failure with.

Darn, now I have to think this over. I don't want to have to replace it in a couple of months.

Get a good one from ScottyB. I like mine. I would have wired mine to stay on all the time but didn't want the light at night to attract attention at the camp grounds.... So mine is wired to turn on with the key...
