2008 Club Car DS questions

I have a guy wanting to sell me a 2008 Club Car DS. 6 inch lift. Large tires and wheels, flip seat, new crown batteries (4 12 volt) and front and rear lights. Cart looks in really nice condition. He wants $3000. Is this a good buy? Can I upgrade controller and motor fairly easy? Any advice and tips would be appreciated.

I purchased a stock 2012 precedent original batteries, (6-8v) for $2700, I was surprised how much difference in price it was for a similar cart 2 years older, $400 cheaper and basically the same cart.
I think you're about right IMO for the price, you can upgrade on any of these carts easy, as long as you have a little money lol. Large tires, rear seat, 6" lift, lights yes good deal, and with the big tires and lift a motor/controller upgrade will ensure a longer life without major issues.

Have him charge the cart today and you go look at it tomorrow. Take a digital voltage meter with you. A fully charged 48v cart with "rested batteries" off the charger for 12 hrs will read 50.9v. Could be a few volts higher if it hasn't been off the charger long, anything lower and it is not fully charged or there is a problem with the batteries. There should be a date stamped on the batteries. probably on neg post, a letter and number. A15,Jan 2015...Drive the cart. Stop and go, quick starts, up hills. Just to make sure you don't get home and find out there is a lot of slack in the steering or it jerks like crazy when you take off fast...The price doesn't sound bad, as long as no problems, but if you could get him down a couple hundred it could go towards your first upgrade. His price sounds fair. I sell carts and parts. A good rule of thumb is too add 50% of the cost of the accessories to the base price of the cart. It sounds as though he spent quite a bit of money on it. Batteries are a big deal though as they can cost approx. $800 to replace depending on the cost of the batteries,hopefully they are Trojans the Sam's club Batteries are OK if you are only going to own it for a few years,about 6 to 8 yr life on them versus 12 yrs with good care on the Trojans,we have changed many sets with 12 yr. on them.

LOL. I sell carts to, and if I got 50% of the price of upgrades on used carts I'd be retired and living down there in FL letting you work on my cart!

The truth of the matter is, that you aren't going to get much of anything in respect to a return on the parts. I know of a 2004 DS with 6 inch lift and custom 12" wheels on really good tires that needs batteries for $1500. If you look you can find killer deals out there. $3000 is not far from a retail vendor price for a used one like that. If I had it on my lot, I'd probably price it around $3500-$3850 and sell it for $3250ish, depending on what I had in it. Typically I get people wanting to trade in their old 36V ezgo txt with bad batteries and upgrade to a nicer cart. I only give $300-$1200 for them depending on condition and if they have a back seat and lights. People all but give carts away that aren't running and they rarely require more than batteries and cables to fix.

Wow. Thanks for ALL the responses guys. I'm in the market. I def want something with torque. Maybe there is something out there better. I have no problem buying a cart, adding new batteries, controller, motor and etc... What are your recommendations for good carts to start with? The guy said he was firm on his price and he's 5 hours away so I don't want to waste my time if there are other carts that I could upgrade easier and better.

Well the options are out there, maybe read around here a while, see the daily issues and go from there. IMO any cart your willing to spend a little money on, the common issues can easily be removed by the upgrades. So that said find something you like and go for it!

The DS is the literal workhorse cart of the industry. The IQ drive models rarely ever have a failure of any kind. The older Vglide's don't have many failures either, however if it did fail the Vglide is an expensive part. But at the end of the day, I sell Club Cars and 95% of the time work on EZGO's. Club Cars come in needing batteries every 4-5 years, occasional MCOR issues but that's about it. EZGO's seem to always have some issue or another, typically electrical.

Which posts do I touch my battery tester to check all batteries at once?

That cart would sell for $4000 all day at my dealership with that lift and new batteries, especially around hunting season ;)
