new owner need help

I'm a 1st time buyer and bought a cheap 87 club car. ..the cart moves slow (5mph) forward and (8mph) in reverse also I jacked the rear end up and could only get 1 wheel or the other to spin, not both at the same time. ...any help and info would be much appreciated. ..sorry if these questions have already been asked and answered (just joined)....thanks in advance

Welcome to BGW. I can answer one of your questions. It is normal for only one wheel to turn when lifted off the ground. If they both turned the same you would not be able to turn a curve. It would try to keep going straight, pushing the front wheel side ways as you tried to turn.

Others will help with the other problems. Post you battery voltages to start with. That will help them know what is wrong.

You're forward and reverse speeds are backward. Reverse should be 1/2 of forward speed. Check out the 'Sticky" above for a wiring diagram that matches your cart and trace the wires from the F+R switch. I think your F+R is miss-wired.

The speeds should be a bit higher. Review the "Sticky" on battery care.

If the batteries are OK, then my next attention would be towards the full speed solenoid and micro switch.

Thanks guys....I've read a lot about the wires being switched...I'm not 100% sure even with the diagram which wires I would need to swap on the fnr

Nobody knows for sure what previous owners may have done without eye-balling it but pictures might help.

The picture got through. Wire colors have been changed over the years (no surprise). I'd try swapping the white and black wires that pivot and see what happens.

That was it. ..running good forward and slower in reverse. ..but the switch on the outside is now opposite...does the lever pop off to switch around?

No, the lever stays. What you found means the wires weren't swapped at the F/R sw. They were switched at the motor. Put the F/R wires back, then trace them to the motor and swap them there. WARNING- You'll need 2 wrenches to remove the wires from the motor studs. One above the lug and one below. Do not allow the motor stud to move or you might be looking for a motor repair shop!!!

By the way, if you don't have a hydrometer (one with a scale not floating balls) and a cheap digital volt meter, get them. They are a must have with a sparky cart.

PS- I hope you disconnected the neg. and pos. ends of the battery pack before doing all this wire swapping.
