Battery Sparking
I installed a horn, radio, battery meter, and a reducer on my 48 volt Club Car. Everything is hooked up but when I connect either the negative wire or positive wire from the reducer to the #1 battery it sparks. What is my problem?

No problem, those are the capacitors inside the voltage converter charging.
What I do on mine is to use an incandescent light bulb (60w or so) and run it in series with the positive cable for a few seconds. Just stand the light bulb on the battery post and touch the cable on the threads of the light bulb, a 60w light bulb is about 240Ω and it will charge the capacitors without a spark. You can then just put the cable on the battery post without a spark. |

Gotta say I would never think of anything like that!!! Kinda sounds like snake oil but guess I will try it. Hope I dont glow along with light bulb!

Ok Sergio---I tried that. Didnt work. Still got sparks when trying to hook up the positive wire.

I have my fuse block attached to a piece of metal which is subsequently attached to the golf cart. Would this cause my problem? If so, what do I do with fuse block?

One other thing----I tried hooking up the positive wire first and it did not spark. However, when I hook up the negative side the negative post sparked. Wish I was more electrical inclined!

As long as the sparks are not much more than a tiny arc don't worry about this.... As commented the reducer has caps in them that will soak up energy and cause a spark when it its circuit is completed. But considering how most of them work the negative side both input and output may very well be common to each other; this will explain why you get a spark hooking one side before the other...

The last connection will complete the circuit.
The light bulb in series with the last cable for 10 seconds would be enough time to charge the capacitors if that is what is causing the sparks. As long as there is no electrical connection from the fuse block to the chassis, using a bracket is not a problem. What reducer are you using? If You have a Tow/Run switch make sure the switch is on Tow. Also make sure the key switch is off. |

It seems to be more than a tiny arc. The reducer is a 25 amp I believe. Key is off, no tow switch.
