how hot should my motor get?

Last weekend I was cruising around on my mostly stock Carryall2. It was really hot outside and I probably was driving for about 30 minutes straight. I was not going fast though. It was bumpy trails so we were just poking along. At the end of the ride I raised the bed to grease up a couple squeaking parts under the bed. While under there my hand brushed against the motor and it was really hot. Probably hot enough to burn you if you left your hand on more than a few seconds. My batteries and cable are immaculate. I was thinking today it could be the gear oil, but I don't know the process for checking and changing this. What temperature should I expect the motor to get up to and what should I do to make sure the oil is ok? THANKS!

I realize this is an old post, but... There's a lot more to be said that might help others who find themselves here. The following applies to SEPEX and SERIES motors only, AC Motors usually run cool to the touch.

Driving around slowly (poking around) generates a lot more heat than WOT. SERIES motors can take it much better than SEPEX, but doing it for long periods like that 30 minutes at a time is one of the worst things you can do to your stock cart motor. Unless you build a cart for creeping, these motors like to run at WOT. A low speed gear and slower tq motor will help tremendously but in general try not to creep for 30 min straight without stopping and cooling things off.

Also because you have no idea what the internal temperature is, I'd say a 200° Motor Case is a good time to stop and smell the roses!
