Smile Changing magnet...need help

Well I took the magnet out of a GE motor with a suggested tool (paint can opener) and the magnet popped right off...however the steel center did not...need a suggestion on how to get that piece off the shaft without pulling the motor. I thought of using a small chisel but I am open to the best method.

I used a regular (flat) screwdriver and pried all the way around the ring to get it off once it separated. Two screwdrivers 180° apart would be optimal.

So...looking at the new magnet it doesn't appear to have an edge to pry on? It seems to me that the motor shaft has a pressed spacer on the shaft...is that what we are prying on?

You can pull the motor and have the magnet changed by now. As well as blow all the carbon dust out. Its less than 20 minute job, if the motor comes off the input shaft.

So the real question is: is the spacer there or not? I can pry on something but it seems more stout than the left over magnet ring...

Are there two sizes of magnet? Upon closer inspection I don't see a ring on the shaft...don't want to pull the motor until I know I have the right part.

Golf Cart Guy you were right...pulled the motor...had to pull the bearing with a puller to get that d##m thing off but it's going back together. Thanks for the advice...this forum rocks! (Isn't that what the young guys say? Lol)

Need more advice...how far down the shaft should the magnet go...? All the way down against the bearing or flush with the end of the shaft?
