Need help picking a motor.

I have an 86 club car with what I believe to be a broken motor. I tested it by hooking A1 to negative, S1 to power, and A2 and S2 together, and it doesn't spin. It was working fine until I put a big load on it at low speed in wet conditions and that's when the the cart stopped working. All the solenoids are clicking, and I believe they're all okay. But either way it appears that my motor is done. The cart is currently set up with six 6 volt batteries for a total of 36 volts. I recently bought the batteries from Costco and I was thinking about returning them and buying six 8 volt batteries and converting it to a 48 volt system. Assuming I can convert it to a 48 volt system what are my motor options. If I do switch to 48v system, do I need to change all 5 solenoids? I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible and get the best bang for the buck so if it's expensive to convert to a 48v system, I'll stick with a 36v.

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

You have fond the right place! There is literally hundreds of years of experience here for free at BGW.

Solenoids and toaster coils are 1920's and earlier technology. You would be doing yourself a favor by jumping up to the solid state controller era. If you plan appropriately now you can upgrade as you chose at a later date.

I am a volt junky, both my carts are 72 volt and I am looking for more voltage. The higher voltage means smaller wire size for more power, big power takes big amps or big voltage.

Depending on what you want any voltage may do what you want. Tell us what you want and need and you will get good solid answers about how to get there.

Now my answers for your questions.

Defiantly go 48 over 36 volts, more volts is more go. It sounds like your motor is toast, so you might need a new one,

If they won't trade your 36 volt pack for the 48 volt pack, double down and go 72 volts.
( I am not being serious but it is what I would do) and get a new charger, controller reversing contactor and wires to support your new golf cart/ drag strip racer and have fun.

And in case you just want it fixed and running there will be help here shortly to get it done.

Thanks Revolution. I think my Boston Terrier is missing riding in the cart as much as I am, LOL.

I'm all for having as much power as possible, I just don't want to spend more than about a $1000 excluding batteries since those I'll exchange. I don't know what it'll cost to upgrade the motor, solenoids, wires, and charger. This is an old cart that I don't think is worth putting much money into.

Is it difficult to rebuild the motor I have? Looking on eBay, a used motor is at least $200. It seems like I can buy a junk parts cart with a good motor for less. If I buy a cheap 48v motor, will it work, and if so, will I lose performance over my old 36v?

I haven't spoke with Plum Quick yet. It's definitely a consideration, but I was hoping to find out from this forum, if there is a better value than buying a Plum Quick.
