Default 48 v charger, buzz then trip breaker

i have a 48v charger that i bypassed the relay to charge some very low drained batteries. batteries were no good and i had not yet put wires on relay and used it to charge my new batteries. i would just monitor the charge and take off when it reached full voltage.

today i tried to replace the wired back onto the relay and after doing so, i got nothing. thinking the relay is bad, i wire nutted the two wires to get constant voltage again. after joining the wires again i got a louder than normal buzz. almost a vibration and then a tripped breaker in the panel. checked connections and tried a few more times. same result. same outlet and same cord. even plugged directly into outlet with no extension.

i put my clamp meter on the wire going into transformer and it read 80 amps just before it throws the breaker.

is it toast or try a rebuild kit.
transformer is very rusty, i would think more so from the elements rather than heat.

If you unhook the wires what happens? Sounds like a dead short.

After my house was struck by lighting the last thing I found damaged was the Power Drive 3 (?) charger; it was doing the same thing you described popping its built-in circuit breaker. In trouble shooting it I found that the transformer was still good as once unhooked from the rectifiers it put out AC voltage. Further trouble shooting showed the I had lost diodes in each SCR bank. Replaced both banks one at a time and it worked fine again.

This is almost always a problem with the diodes / rectifier in the charger. Is your powerdrive charger a #17930, #22110, #26560 or a #26580?

We've got the parts to fix you up, just want to make sure to steer you in the right direction.
