1983 club car wont move until 3/4 trottle
I have a 1983 club car that I just got. The batteries are new. When I push the pedal to go I can hear all 5 switches click. Also with the key on I can hear both the first and the second silinoid click without moving. once the 3rd silinoid clicks the cart peels out and takes off. Any Ideas where to start? Thanks
Oh Its a 1983 club car 36vt electric with the 5 silinoids and coils. |

The first solenoid is good. If it wasn't good, it wouldn't run at all. After the first solenoid clicks, the solenoid bank is turned "on". For every click after the first one you should feel a burst of speed. If there is no burst at the 2nd solenoid, it's bad. The same can be said for all three remaining solenoids. The part number for the replacement solenoids is 8016.

I don't tell a difference after the third click. it's just full speed it seems.

Re: 1983 club car wont move until 3/4 trottle
It shouldn't run full speed until the 5th solenoid clicks. The 5th solenoid would have to be stuck "closed" for it to go full speed on the 3rd click. However, if the 5th speed was stuck "closed" it would take off full speed on the first click. This isn't the case since you have no response until the third click. My advice is to replace them all with new ones. I'm sure they're all got some age on them and they're probably all very similar in condition.

im not sure if my wiring is right. the guy I got it from said they had to redo the wiring because they thought it was bad but it turned out to be a bad charger. so im not sure what they rewired.
It does the same in forward or reverse. 2 solenoid clicks then full speed. |

If you have reason to believe the wiring has been tampered with, it is definitely possible to miss-wire the solenoids as to simulate the same symptoms that you are having.
The 1st solenoid as it is being referred to, is the one on the driver's side without any resistor coils on the big post. Press the pedal slowly and verify the solenoids are being powered in sequence. You can measure the voltage at the "small" posts to verify when each solenoid is being powered, they should power 1->5 as you hear the 1->5 clicks. |

Re: 1983 club car wont move until 3/4 trottle
with the key off I can hear all 5 clicks from the switches when you push the pedal down slowly. but im not sure if the first click is lined up with the first solenoid click with the key on. ill check that and go from there.
The reason im wondering about the wiring is because when i got the cart it was not running. they had the keyswitch wiring half unhooked. the half that was hooked up was on the positive side and not the negative. on this cart the keyswitch is negative. I moved the wiring to the negative and it started working, but only like it is now. |
