Battery Break-in Question
I just installed 4 new Trojan T1275s in my 2004 Precedent. I was reading up on the battery break-in procedure in the sticky's and needed to know something. How can I tell when I've discharged my batteries to 50%?
I saw a chart that had different voltage levels for 50% of charged. Is that a good "go-by"? |

Re: Battery Break-in Question
You do not want to be discharging your batteries down to 50 % SOC under any circumstances unless you have no other options. The general rule for new batteries is not much different than taking care of batteries in general other than for the first couple dozen uses that you try not to discharge more than 20 to 25 % before charging. The best rule to pass on for long battery life is to keep them plugged into their charger when ever you are not riding around...
The SOC via voltage chart is a very good go by.... |

Re: Battery Break-in Question
I agree with Teecro about staying above the 50% SOC at any time during the battery life.
I believe the sites that talk about taking it easy on the first few cycles are referring to the rate at which the batteries are being discharged. Just don't tow any thing or do too much hard acceleration for the first few cycles as the high current demand puts heat and stress on the battery plates |

Re: Battery Break-in Question
I would just put a cheap voltmeter on there and charge them when they get to about 49.5...no lower , and like the others said , no tow or long hill climbing....or, the other school of thought is "drive it like you stole it"...

Re: Battery Break-in Question
The Carts Unlimited website states to run new batteries down to 75% SOC and recharge 10-20 times. Here is the link> http://cartsunlimited.net/Battery_Break-in_Methods.html

Re: Battery Break-in Question
Thanks for responding guys. I will be taking it easy on these batteries for a little while and keeping the charger plugged in when not in use. As always, your help is greatly appreciated.
