The guys made the same points I was going to make about that charger, so in reference to the OBC:

The timer will work for now, but since the OBC is malfunctioning, there is no guarantee the current control circuit will not fail also which would boil the batteries and release a lot of hydrogen gas as the voltage on the pack climbs.

There are many versions of the OBC available, I would definitely check with David from RevolutionGolfcars.com if You decide to price/replace the OBC as he is very knowledgeable in that area.

If you have multiple carts, the DPI charger is an easy decision since it would work well with any cart, but for a single cart I would price both options.

Just a thought about the timing and logistics, if You by-pass the OBC now and also run the "Gray" sense wire to pack negative, You can still use the existing charger in manual mode since it would come ON.

You can then drop-ship a new DPI charger to the final destination and It would just be plug and play.

how often do these things fail?
This question was not answered, directly - so I'll take a shot: People have been known to have OBC's work properly for many years (I'm one of them) - but it's not an exaggeration to say that they have been a weak-point on Club Cars for quite a long time. New Club Cars no longer use this "proprietary technology", so I think its safe to assume that the manufacturer's choice to abandon their use, shows that reliability has been suspect.

OK, I will stop beating the dead horse with one more question. As you can probably tell, I'm resisting spending money right now.

If I connect the gray wire to the negative terminal of the battery pack, will the sharger track the current required like it is now? Then I could use the timer on the charger I have.

I don't know if the OBC would regulate the current if it cannot "sense" the charger is plugged in, which is what would happen if you plug the "sense" wire directly to pack negative.

That is typically only done as an emergency work around to keep the batteries charged until either an OBC or a new charger is obtained.

I don't know anyone has ever tried using an unregulated Powerdrive charger with an AC timer for an extended period of time.

Ok, one more update, I reset the OBC again, when I reconnected the battery negative, no light. When I turned the key to ON and pressed the accelerator when the cart moved, I got 2 3 second lights, 3 seconds on, 3 seconds off, 3 seconds on then off. I then connected the charger, I got a 3 second light, then off. The cart will still move when the charger is connected, but I have no more light flashing, thoughts?

If the cart runs with the charger plugged in, the OBC is either bad, or bypassed. With a bypassed OBC, the charger would never turn off, exactly as you describe.

So am I back to buying an OBC?

I guess I'm uncertain of the diagnosis, I suppose I'm safe with a new OBC though.

It definitely sounds like there's an issue with the one that's on it. You need either an OBC or a charger that doesn't require one.

Which one did you order? There are several different software versions.
