Default Battery Meltdown

I pulled my 03 club car into the garage a few nights ago and forgot to turn the key off. The cart was not left charging either. Three days later I tried to back it out and it wouldn't move. I stuck the charger on it and the charger wouldn't kick on. Thinking my charger went out or Ive completely ruined my battery's I flipped the seat up and examine the situation. One of my terminals melted completely. I'm going to replace the battery but Id like to know if me levering the key on is the main issue here or is there something else I need to check out. Are there any concerns with this issue starting a fire if it happens again?

Welcome to BGW - Tell us more about the cart.
Big tires?
Rear seat?
Bigger control or motor?
Off road use?
stuff like that

This heat could have been caused by excessive amperage draw, a dirty connection, or under sized components.

Thanks!

It's an 03 club car. It's got a 4" jakes lift on it with mud tires. As far as I know everything is stock. It has a back seat but it doesn't flip down. I've had it for 3 years now. Put new battery's in it last year. Duracell procell from batteries plus. I got the cables from a local auto parts store. We just use it to run around the neighborhood. Mainly on the street.

Usual cause is a bad connection at the battery terminal but it happens when you are driving the cart not when it's sitting.

Terminal melt down is normally cause when the cable is loose from the terminal and melted during use. In the future keep a close eye on the connections and check all cables in making sure all connections are tight. Those cables are also not designed to carry constant current a cart needs to run. They get hot and expand and contract creating a loose connection.. They could of cause your problem as well..

Cables from an auto parts store are a problem. The strand count is too low and the lugs are paper thin. Not suitable for the sustained amp loads our carts generate.

Any recommendations on what cables to run? I'll get some new ones ordered asap. I appreciate everyone's comments.
