Default Air Shocks

Has anyone installed air shocks on the rear of their cart to compensate for the weight of a rear seat and riders?

Do air shocks give a better ride than HD springs?

I've not installed any air shocks, but would be fun to do I would think. It's just that by replacing the leaf springs with HD springs, solves the issue without too much expense.

I'm waiting on parts, then hopefully I'll find time to upgrade before snow.

I bought a CC with a rear seat and a single leaf. 90% of the time it will be only my wife and I riding. The other time will be spent taking people down and up a steep hill to the lake.

After reading the forum I kept coming across how the 2 and 3 HD leafs were like riding a hard tail chopper. No suspension at all. Not what I wanted for 90% of the time.

My solution is two part. First is to add a Stens helper leaf to the CC Clicky Cost approx. $30. This is to be used when people will jump on the back without prior planning.

Second part is installing Monro Matic MA705 air shocks Clicky2 back onto the lower mounting point and not the lift shock point. Cost approx. $55. I'll use this when I know for a fact company is coming over and I will be hauling people around.

I have yet to see anything on past posts about this type of a setup. To me logically it should work great, but who knows in the real world once I get the parts and install them. Total cost is close or even less then a 2 or 3 HD leaf package.

If anyone can see why this would not work, please give a shout out.

I use air shocks on the front and rear. I have a small on board compressor so I can make adjustments as needed for passengers and cargo. I am considering using lighter duty springs and more air pressure for better range of adjustment.

I would also like to know if this setup would work. The only thing I see that may cause problems would be clearance between the thicker shock body and the axle. If that was an issue, I guess you could always extend the mounting point a bit farther away from the axle, but this would entail fabricating another plate with a mounting location farther from the U-bolts. The Allsports plate that I have has already bent, so that may be in my near future anyway.

So has mine on my cheap Jake's lift kit knockoff. Only way I can see that happening is the shock being fully retracted and acting like a sledge hammer on the mounting plate.

The shock should absorb the impact not transfer it. Guessing air shocks would raise the cart enough to let the shocks do their job for the load being carried.

My big concern is the weld. Since the weld is now on the bottom of the axle any pressure will be directed to that connection point. When the mounting point is on the top of the axle, the axle carries the force. You also have the U bold that hopefully would transfer some of the energy to the axle.

Like Daddy would say, "There's never time to do it right, but always time to do it over."

My shocks are mounted on top of the lift blocks and my research has recommended the Monroe MA 705 air shock or the 58539 spring over adjustable Monroe shock. Both are comparable in length but chart does not specify diameter of shocks, I am concerned about clearance for upper mounting point

Any info on diameter?

You would need to measure and make some brackets , basically it sits on the spring and the upper bracket goes to frame rail, on a pick up truck, a lot of lowrider trucks use them so looking at those websites might get you some ideas,
I didn't see any ready made kits , so it would be some fabricating to get them installed and working.
