Default 06 precedent, charger does not shut off

My neighbor has an 06 precedent that we just put an Altrax XCT 400 in with an Admiral motor and everything was fine for a week but now his charger is not shutting off. The batteries are only a month old and he plugged it in around 7pm 2 nights ago and in the morning it was still charging and he could hear the bubbling, he tried again last night and this morning it was still charging. After he unplugs it he says the voltage is around 54v.

What do you think?

Thanks
Rob

You say everything WAS fine for a week AFTER the install of the controller? But the batteries are also now NEW too right? How long has he allowed the charger to charge these new batteries? Many times it will take upward of 16 hours but not longer to completely charge new batteries. Ask him what is the voltage with the charger still hooked up and charging after at least 12 hours of charging? You should see voltage upward of 64 to perhaps even 65 and as long as the amperage in way down toward zero it is fine. The sound of active bubbling is very common with new batteries....

Also what is his voltage 12 hours AFTER unplugging with no use; not right after unplugging....

If the charging cycle is taking more than 16 hours, either the OBC is bad or the charger relay is stuck closed.

Without plugging the DC cord into the cart, plug the charger into the AC and make sure You do not hear a "hum" from the transformer and there is no voltage when You measure the + and - on the disconnected DC plug.

Since he has had the new batteries this is the first time that they were still charging in the morning. He did say that he had a burnt smell from under the seat this morning. He does not get home till 6 so I will check the charger then.

Good stuff guys, thanks

One more thing, if the charger relay test shows it is not stuck, and the battery warning light is working, go ahead and do an OBC reset.

Disconnect the pack power for at least 10 minutes.

The first time You turn the Key ON and try to drive the cart, the battery warning light will illuminate for 10 seconds indicating the OBC has reset.

Just to check, You do have a single cable going from pack negative to controller B- passing through the OBC, right?

Yes, evdrives wire kits have one wire with only one end and after you pass it through the OBC they have a compression lug to simple screw on.

When you say "try to drive the cart" will there be a 10 second delay when the throttle is pressed and the battery warning light illuminates before the cart moves?

Thanks

If I recall correctly, there is a small delay when you first press the pedal, but the battery warning light does stay ON for about 10 seconds.

I remember a delay the first time when we had first put the upgrade in (batteries disconnected for an hour or so) but I did not pay attention to a battery warning light.

Thanks

Whoooops, it did it again, my neighbor said his charger was still running this morning, he will try resetting the OBC when he gets home tonight. What does the OBC do, is this a symptom of an OBC going bad, can it be eliminated?

Thanks
