Default Hot Wires @ F/R Switch

Hey Guys,

I am pretty new to electric carts, just picked up a '98 Club Car DS 48v (Series) that has been sitting a while. Poor thing doesn't look like it was ever used. Trying to get it all working well again. Just put in some new batteries, already has what looks to be an aftermarket 4.7HP motor.

It seems to run very well, with the exception of a few things. Every now and then the cart will randomly run slow in forward, if I move to reverse it will give full speed (no half speed). I was wondering if the half speed reverse deal was backwards, I read to flip the white/black wire for people that had this problem and the cart just ran slow in both F&R, that didn't work! :P

I also noticed that the orange and blue cables behind the F/R switch are HOT, they definitely shouldn't be that hot, no other cables are even close to hot. Other other potential symptom is if you give it full throttle from rest, there will be a momentary shudder from the motor before you get going.

If I do need something like a solenoid or a new switch, product recommendations would be great. Cart will see plenty of use around the farm, not afraid to throw some good parts at it.

Anyone who could point me in the right direction here would be much appreciated! Still working to understand everything that is going on here. :) Thanks!- Jack

The 48v Series F&R switches are a weak point in the amperage delivery system. The bigger motor and the off road use will demand increase amperage demand. Delivery will require bigger fresh cables throughout the cart and a HD F&R. Use my HD CC F&R for $139 and 4g cables with the stock control or 2g cables if you plan on upgrading the controller to 500a with pkg #454 later on.

Do you think that could be related to the take off shudder? I spent several hours on your site last night, was looking at the reversing contactors, seems like a much better solution than the rotary style switch. Are there any downsides to not having a "neutral"?
