Smile 2014 cc charger

Have a neighbor that has a 2004 CC DS with a no charge issue...he got a wild hair and decided to use a buddy's charger from a 2014 CC and it worked! So my question is: Does the late model CC use a different system than the early CC? Is the charger more like an EzGo with the controller built into the charger and is that why it worked? I told my neighbor he has a bad OBC and I am trying to explain why the late model CC charger worked...any help would be great.

The new Club Car high frequency charger E.R.I.C is a smart charger that does not need the OBC.

Your neighbor needs to make sure the negative from the charger receptacle (10ga wire) goes directly to pack negative otherwise the OBC will interfere with the regular charge cycle.

It is also a good idea to by-pass the OBC lockout so the OBC can not cause the cart to be disabled in the future.

The reason it worked it because your friend with the 2004 vehicle has one of the old style "beige" OBCs on his cart. The beige OBC would allow you to force power through it with a charger that would control itself. The newer grey OBC will not allow such a thing. It MUST be bypassed to charge with that particular style of charger. We used to have a "hot-charger" (charger with relay bypassed) to boost batteries that were completely dead. Back in the day, we could just plug it into the receptacle and the OBC would allow it. We eventually had to put alligator clips on the end of the leads of our "hot-charger" to go straight to the battery posts due to the new design of the newer OBC. If you had tried the new E.R.I.C. charger on a newer cart with the grey OBC it wouldn't have worked at all.
