Making my own cables
Do people usually make their own cables? I can buy the material, 2 gauge welding wire and copper ends for $42. My father in law has a crimper I can use. anybody have any tips for me. It's going on a stock 06 Club Cart Precedent. Will be getting the 6" lift and 23" tires/ 14" wheel combo soon.

Re: Making my own cables
If your father in law has a professional crimper tool like an FTZ that creates a diamond or hex crimp, that will work great.
You just need to know the exact brand as the tool, dies and lugs have to be matched to the cable size. If what he has is an anvil and hammer type or a inexpensive crimper, You will not be able to make good high current cables. |

Re: Making my own cables
i made my own 2ga cable for my DS but i used solider slugs instead of crimping . I also turned 3 of my batteries around so all my cables run on the outside and dont cross over the battery .

I made my own cables the same way that you are planning on just remember not to crimp the lug on the cable that goes through the OBC until after you run the cable through it. The lug will not fit through the OBC.

Two gauge wire will not fit through OBC, you will need a stud

Re: Making my own cables
I used that anvil type that Sergio mentioned and the only way I could get a good crimp was to use my big vise and crimped the anvil tool to the right depth, it was a PIA and would of preferred a better tool for the job.

Re: Making my own cables
A good quality crimp will apply pressure evenly around the lug turning the cable into a gas tight solid mass that will be secure and immune to corrosive gasses.
You will also need some adhesive lined heat shrink tube to finish the job right. |

Re: Making my own cables
Sergio, I heard one guy call that heat shrink tube a corrosion catcher or something like that. Showed how the said got under that heat shrink and made a huge mess and screwed up the cable. Thanks, that's another thing I wanted to ask, but forgot.
