Default Cart Just Stopped

Hi everyone. I just bought a 1996 Club Car DS (36V), and it was working very well for a week or so. Then it just died.

What it does now is move very slowly for just a foot or so when fully charged.

Because it was running so well, and then just stopped, I have been operating on the assumption that the batteries are okay. Do they just up and die suddenly? The previous owner (an elderly, trustworthy guy) told me the batteries were only two years old. Here is what I've done:

- First I convinced myself that the forward-reverse switch was bad, so I changed it. No help

- Then I convinced myself that the solenoid was bad, so I changed it. Again no help.

- When I connect the batteries directly to the motor, with the wheels jacked up, the wheels spin forward, but not backwards. The wheels don't spin at all when they are on the ground.

- When I measure the voltage across the fully-charged battery pack, it's over 38V. Each battery is around 6.5V. When I step on the accelerator and measure voltage, it's 33V across the pack, and something like 5.4V across each battery. Seems like there must be current flowing somewhere (the resistance coils get hot but the motor doesn't seem to do anything.

I must have batteries that are bad, a motor that needs to be refurbished bad brushes?), or maybe there's something wrong with the speed control switch. I don't know how to rule any of the above out.

Anyone got an idea? Help me!!! :)

Open the V-glide and verify that the wiper is reaching the top terminal at full throttle
v-glide .... clean it

check wear line

check alignment

Disconnect all wires from motor using two wrenches as to not turn post. (also disconnect battery pack).

then check continuity for these value

a1 to a2 should show continuity
s1 to s2 should show continuity

a1 to s2 should not show continuity
a1 to case should not show continuity
s1 to case should not show continuity

motor dust would cause one of the non connecting situations to have a connection via the dust buildup. More than likely on a 20 year old motor, if this is the case, you can expect the armature to have issues as well (i.e. time for new motor).

Check your resistors for breaking, rusting, burning

check date on batteries ... should be stamped in the negative battery post

your reading seem to say batteries are good

Thanks Crash. I'll heck the v-glide and motor wires this evening.

Also use a voltmeter (if you don't have one get one) or a digital volt meter and see what the pack voltage has dropped to when the cart is not moving as it should. Batteries can have sudden failure. This is test #1 in my book

When I opened the V glide to take a look, the problem was blatantly obvious. The wiper is broken in two and burned up. The top part is stuck at the bottom, and the lever rotates with contact with the brushes. What in the world would cause that? Can I buy a wiper, or do I need the whole assembly?
