2003 ds steering problem
I need help on my 2003 DS. The steering had gotten really bad play from 9 to 3 without any tire movement I had checked all the tie rod ends and they were completely shot. UncleJerm sent me replacement tie rod ends in the BGW gift exchange ( thank you UncleJerm). Tonight was the first chance that I have had to work on it however it seems my problem is more than just tie rod ends. I disconnected every ball joint for replacement and even with everything off I still have play in the wheel with no movement from the steering box from 9 to 3 then it gets really hard to turn, I had thought the hard turn was because of bad joints. My question is can you rebuild the steering box or do I need to replace it.

Re: 2003 ds steering problem
Frizbgolf I'm not sure exactly how yours is set up but did you look at the rack joint coming right off the rack (rack joint is under the bellows "boot"), also check the steering knuckles coming from your column, make sure they're not coming off, or they rotate smoothly, one other thing is on the rack there is a large threaded cap with a large jam nut, behind it there is a spring that holds tension to the steering shaft, if you snug it a little that will take the slop out of the rack, if its to tight it will become hard to turn..

Re: 2003 ds steering problem
The problem seems to be the gear that the steering wheel attaches to I have a lot of slop there then it feels like it is binding.

I talked to Dave yesterday, he told me to check the steering knuckle. He was spot on with that advice one of the universal joints is froze up. Thank you Dave for your help will be getting with you for a replacement.
