Noob owner of a 07 Precedent
Hello. My wife and I gifted each other with a 48v 07 Precedent a few weeks ago. It has a RHOX 6" Spindle lift kit, two tone seats, rear seat, radio/speakers, 22x12 tires, and 2014 Trojan batteries. It's a great looking cart and I think we got a good deal.
The two front tires were bald and the cart was REALLY unstable ("squirrely") once we got up to a decent speed. I put on two new tires and had the front end aligned. It feels a LOT more stable now, but taking turns at higher speeds is still a little scary. I'm considering converting to a Madjax 6" Double A-Arm - the local guy swears by them, and promises it'll increase the stability. he also suggested installing HD springs in the rear. Any thoughts? The batteries are 2014 Trojans, I checked the code. When I pulled the caps I could tell that the fluid was low. Between the 4 batteries I used about 3/4 of a gallon of distilled water - they previous owner must've NEVER filled them. I did a few "double charges" - once the charger turns off you unplug the DC cable, wait a minute, then plug it back it so it starts the charging process over. I then filled the batteries again (using the old school tea-pitcher looking battery filler). After reading these forums I'm wondering if I should add a little epsom water to them during the next filling. They register right at 64 volts with my meter - each battery spits out about 16V. Any thoughts on that? The controller is a Curtis 1510A-5250, and the OBC is a Lester 25565-02. The previous owner provided me with no info on the upgrades. I believe the lights are a MadJax upgrade (is there an easy way to verify?). I see that the blue wire on battery 4's positive terminal has been used, and I believe this is for the light kit - Since this is only crossing the first 3 batteries, does it mean that the lights are only getting 36V? The radio was cheap AND blown out - I think they'd try to power it with the whole battery pack - there were two red wires coming from the dash to the battery pack and the HOT lead was melted off. i replaced it with a Kenwood that was laying around, and I added insulated alligator clamps to the wire ends and everything worked. Now we get into talking religion, at least from what I can tell from some of the heated discussions in these forums. Are those lights just using the first 3 batteries? If I hook the radio directly up to the 4th battery, could I ASSume that the drain I put on that battery would roughly equal out to the drain the lights put on the other three? Would the wire harness (bucket harness) going to the front carry a 12V switched feed that I could connect to the radio? I'd like to eventually hook up a horn (one of the cheesy OOOUUUUGGGGAA horns - $10 from Harbor Freight, how can I resist) and maybe an adapter for a phone charger. I know that voltage reducers are a popular option - but given the irregularity of radio/accessory use is it worth the expense? Finally - another other hints/tips that y'all are willing to share? This was a big investment for us and I'd like to get as much longevity as I can from it.. Thanks! |

Wow, you said a lot. Don't use anything in the batteries but distilled water. Only fill to the bottom of the fill neck, never up into the neck.
Sounds like you are running 12 volts off your last battery. For the use you have planed you need a 12-48 volt reducer. Site sponsors would be best source. Like you said someone may have wrongly connected 36 volts and did some damage. I have no first hand experience on lift kits, but the double A arm seems to be the favorite on this site. Others will reply with more answers, good luck and enjoy the carts. |

Well then we will have to question the accuracy of your meter then. As a 48 volt bank of batteries even if in GREAT shape will not read more than a point or two north of 51 volts... Fully charge the cart, once charger has turned itself off, unplug the charger, let cart rest 8 to 12 hours and then get a voltage reading. Only while charging in the finish/equalize mode will one see voltage north of 64 volts (64.

I checked the batteries today after the cart had been charged, then unplugged and left to sit for over 12 hours. Each battery was 12.6, and the total pack charge was 50.8 - so I guess the batteries were 12.64xxxx. According to the Trojan maintenance page, those values are acceptable, right?

I wouldn't start moving wires on the batteries around to see what would happen. It could turn into an expensive lesson. Also a Club Car Precedent w/o a lift will drive like a sports car at high speeds. I'd consider removing the lift kit.
