Upgrading my 04 Precedent

I've been putting it off for a while but circumstances dictate that it's time to upgrade. My 04 Precedent was all stock except for a 6" jakes lift kit, 22" tires and a flip seat. I mainly use it riding in the woods and as a work cart around the house. I replaced the batteries a couple of months ago. My cables were still 6 AWG and they were getting in bad shape. So I just got me some 2 AWG welding cable and made a new set for my cart. That turned out to be a great success. The new cables gave me a noticeable bump in power and speed.

My main concern for an upgrade had been to get more power for climbing hills. There was one little issue that came up as a result of my cable work. I hooked up the cables on my batteries before I hooked up the cables on my motor. While making the connections on my motor I hit the next post and took out reverse. Did some research here and made a few checks. Looks like I'll be replacing my controller. But first thing first....

There was also an issue with my motor where the A2 post had a lot of movement. It really need to be repaired but I wasn't sure that I wanted to open up the motor. I emailed Plum Quick with the idea of just replacing my motor with an new bandit. After talking with Robby Steen he steered my away from getting a bandit. I really appreciated his honesty in what would work best for my needs. I had heard some horror stories on here about trying to get a motor off but it looked like that was the next step. I just finished making the repairs to the motor and it could not have gone any smoother. The motor came off easily. I replaced the insulators to the posts and while I was in there I replaced the brushes and springs. It went back together easily and it only took me a few hours. My confidence is really beginning to grow....

I still have that issue with the controller to deal with. I just placed an order for a new Alltrax XCT400IQ controller with ScottyB. I hope that the installation of that new controller goes as well as the rest of the upgrades/repairs. We'll see. I'll let you know when I get it done.

A little advice for the future that you probably already know. Always disconnect the battery and flip the run/tow switch to tow. Also make a drawing or take a picture before taking anything loose.

Thanks for the advice. I did know to do that. I just got a little ahead of myself and forgot to take them back off after I checked to make sure they fit alright. That is a little bit of an expensive lesson to learn but I bet I won't forget it next time. It also became an opportunity to upgrade my controller. Live and learn. I use my phone to take pictures so I know how things were connected.

Cool. I plan on making my own set of 2 ga cables for my cart in the near future. The stock 6 ga cables really aren't cut out for the added strain of the lift and bigger tires...

Most of my driving is off-road with large hills. My cart has 22" tires and I was looking to increase torque. He said "I don’t like to upgrade a stock IQ motor for off roading with 22” tall tires and steep hills, you’ll draw a lot of amps and could burn the motor up." That lead me towards just keeping my stock motor and upgrading my controller.

I had read on here about folks doing the upgrade and I had wanted to do that myself. I really wasn't expecting it to make that much difference but it really did. I've only had a chance to drive it around a little but the difference showed up right away in a noticeable increase in speed. I haven't taken the time to try and measure it yet. My biggest desire was that it would pull up the hills a little better. It pulls up the biggest hill now and barely slows up.

I ordered the 2 AWG welding cable and the 2 AWG 5/16" lugs along with 3/4" heat shrink. I should have added a few 2/0 or 3/0 lugs for combining some of the wires. I managed to bum a few of those to get it done.
