07 Precedent Wire Upgrades
Hello. I was out driving around on the ice this weekend..it was great. When I was all done I put the cart on the charger and went inside. Later that night (like 8 hours later) I noticed that the charger needle was still at the far right of the gauge - like the cart wasn't taking a charge. Popped up the seat to see that the positive terminal on battery #4 was buzzing, and there was a little blue arc...great. So I'm tightening everything up and noticing that the battery wire ends aren't full rings - instead of 360 rings they're closer to 270 arcs.
So, long story longer - I want to upgrade the wires. I'm debating on 2g versus 4g and brass bolt versus vaseline and shoving the wire through the OBC. There are several threads in the forums discussing it - but they aren't helping me with my decision. I don't plan on upgrade the controller, solenoid, motor, etc anytime soon - but it will probably happen in the future. I see wiring kits for as low as a 4g for $99 (east coast carts 1245CCP) all the way up to ScottyB's $229 2g kit. I know you get what you pay for, and I'm MORE than willing to give my business to ScottyB because he's helped me with several questions already. I just need guidance on what makes the most sense given my setup. I'm somewhat mechanically inclined (change the car oil, put on a new starter, etc) but in no way am I advanced. Thanks! |

Re: 07 Precedent Wire Upgrades
Now that it's a little warmer I went out to verify the current wire gauge - they're unmarked. I had ASSumed they were the OEM wires - but wouldn't those have the ring connectors on them? Also, I noticed that the #4 battery positive wired (the one that goes to #3's neg) had actually melted a little. So I decided to go ahead and pull it off for a good cleaning - the post bolt just turns and turns - great.

Re: 07 Precedent Wire Upgrades
4g is good for the stock system and upgrades up to 400a controls. 500a controls should use 2g cable sets. Hope this helps

Re: 07 Precedent Wire Upgrades
Considering that your price is the same for 2g or 4g (according to your site) is there any reason to NOT go with the 2g set? Are they that more difficult to work with?

Re: 07 Precedent Wire Upgrades
Most likely will need the OBC stud kit if you upgrade to 2g, & yes it is a little tricky installing the larger cables. Not necessary if you do as ScottyB's chart and upgrade to a 400a controller.

Re: 07 Precedent Wire Upgrades
The new CU website was launched in Dec 2015 and customers are still helping us find errors in so much data. Thank you for the heads up. The error has been corrected. There is a $30 price difference between the 4g and 2g set.
There is no reason not to go 2g over 4g for any control. Larger cable = less resistance & a higher flow capacity. What the website data is trying to say is , 4g is all that is required to allow unrestricted flow from a 400a control. At 500a 2g is required. |

Re: 07 Precedent Wire Upgrades
Thanks jjance. I should be able to get it taken care of, there's a good YouTube video someone posted in an earlier thread that shows a guy putting a new post on a battery, I think I can swing it.
I've been READING wayyyyy too much on controller and wire upgrades. I really don't plan on upgrading the engine anytime soon (although PlumQuick is only about 10miles away). I have a million questions - but most of them don't apply if I'm just upgrading the cables today. If the cart is running fine and I'm happy with the current torque/speed, then there's not REAL reason to upgrade the controller yet, right? I'm interested in stretching the runtime out, which means increasing efficiency, and I can see a cable upgrade doing just that - but I'm not sure about the controller. |

Re: 07 Precedent Wire Upgrades
Do you have 8 or 12 volt batteries in there.

Re: 07 Precedent Wire Upgrades
Increasing the controller size will allow the motor to draw more amperage and potentially (depending upon the actions of the driver) produce the opposite effect.
