2000 electric club car needs more power
HI all! New to forum so be kind lol. I bought a 2000 48 volt Club Car and rehabbed it. It needed batteries so I put in 4 12 volt deep cycle batteries in series to get the 48 volts. Probably should have went the 6 8 volt batteries but money was getting tight. The cart runs fine on level ground but going up hills it seems low on power. I have cleaned all the electrical connections so I know that's not an issue. I probably could have put in bigger batteries but didn't. My question is this - Can I add another 12 volt battery in parallel to boost the amperage? I'm not sure if it would damage the motor or the 48 volt charger.
Thanks in advance for your replies. Bob |

The deep cycle batteries may not be able to discharge at the rate required for a golf cart motor.

I guess that's possible but still looking to find out if it would hurt anything to put another battery in parallel with the series batteries.

Re: 2000 electric club car needs more power
1) Your 48v charger would not charge a 5 battery pack of 60 volts. But more volts means more speed, and would do little for hill climbing ability, anyway.
2) What kind of deep cycle batteries...you mean marine type batteries? If so - it will never have enough amps to climb hills briskly. 3) What your asking increases voltage (60v) - but amperage is what you need for hills - only HEAVY/REAL golf cart batteries have enough amperage to do it well (when dealing with lead acid batteries, weight and amps are directly related). You don't really mean parallel do you? If you were wiring in parallel - 4 more batteries would be needed to have any effect at all. |

If you parallel a 12 volt battery with one of the 12 volt batteries in the series it wouldn't increase the output to 60 volts it would still be 48 volts. I've never tried anything like this before and wonder if it would increase the amps to the motor and if the charger would still work ok.

Bob,did you go with just deep cycle batteries or regular golf cart batteries ?.

Adding just one battery in parallel would just mess-up your charging levels between batteries (per mrgolf), and would do essentially nothing to increase amperage. You'd have to double every battery (eg. 8 batteries total) to do that - but keeping eight batteries woven-together like that in balance, would be highly unlikely no matter how carefully you tried to monitor them. Anyway - with only one battery "doubled" your cart would still revert to the weakest links in the chain...namely, those three "weak-undoubled" batteries with their limited amperage. |
