Default 2005 Precedent Complete rebuild...Need ideas

I too have just received a Hurricane Ike casualty. I got a 2005 48v Precedent for free. It was basically submerged in salt water for a while. I assume the whole electrical system is shot..batteries, speed controller, motor, etc. I am a complete novice at carts but always wanted to spend some time and really trick one out and figured a free cart to do as I please with would be a good start.

I want to make it as fast as possible without losing too much torque.

I figure I need to start with getting it running, then I can add the lift kit, tires, bling, etc.

If anyone out there has a checklist of things I need to buy or do that would be great. I would also like recomendations on motors speed controllers etc.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Welcome to the forum teckersley..................

Just keep talking to the folks who have already restored Ike victims. Some will take more & some will need less.

Man the Precedent has tons of wires in it. Looks like the harness in our BMW. You better buy a complete FACTORY wiring kit for that one. While you are at it, buy every electronic component it has.

On a side note, I have been wanting to convert a Precedent to a SERIES cart. This might be your chance to start something new. It will definately be faster!

First, get a factory service manual... It will be the best money you spend on this project.. Second, loosen the drain plug on the differential and inspect the condition of the axle lube.. Water will settle to the bottom of the housing.. If water or milky looking oil is the first thing that runs out when the plug is removed, plan on finding a good used axle assy...

Personally, I'd plan on disassembling the cart down to the last bolt.. Powerwash the frame, and inspect for corrosion damage.. The entire electrical system will be a write-off.. All the sub-components (steering rack, steering column, Pedal Group, Differential) will need to be disassembled and inspected for water intrusion, cleaned, and reassembled with fresh lubricant..

Good luck and Deep Pockets!!! You'll need a bit of both!!

Or...just box it up and send it to me!

Have you give some thought to converting it to gas? Having to replace everything this may be something to check into as far as cost effectiveness.

Good luck, if you see my dad down there, tell him I said hi.

Here is what I would do if it were mine. Strip all the elecronics and wires, pull the rearend, front bearings, brake system and cables. Go over this stuff with a fine tooth comb. Once the rolling chassis is declared OK to use, I would make that Precedent a series motor cart. By that I mean I would go with an Alltrax 4865Controller. It will fit just fine uder the component cover, a GE D380 5.5 Non-Peak HP @ 5700 RPM (48volts), a conversion from 4 12's to 6 8volt batteries. A HD 48 volt solenoid and 4 ga wiring all the way around. 2 ga would work but not required. I don't care much for lifted carts SO, I would go with 215-65-10 tires which are 2.5" taller than the standard tire. I would estimate a 30-35 mph Precedent when you are done.

You know what, let me know if you come across another flooded Precedent. I need a good project and this would be fun.

As an alternate to the above, you could go gasoline as someone else suggested. The speeds are unlimited according to your wallet but, these things are dangerous at really fast speeds.

Good Stuff Augusta...The problem I am finding with the 6 8v battery and series set up suggestions are:

1) I can not find anyone who knows for sure if the stock battery compartment will accomodate the 6 8v set up.

2) assuming it would not, I can not find anyone internet or otherwise that lists any "alternative" battery compartment
3) I know I need to replace all the other electrical stuff like MCOR, switches etc but will all of those accomodate the series and 6 8v set up or would that open up a whole other can of worms? In other words, can I buy all replacement stock OEM parts and just do the motor, controller, and solenoid for series and 6 8v battery setup?
4) Does this impact the IQ version somehow that I need different parts for other than the same OEM stock stuff?
5) assuuming good answers above, do I need a different charge set up?

Any enlightenment would be awesome.

Thanks

I have a 2004 precedent, there's not enough room for 6 of the 8 volt batt.,I have already tried it,you have to fab. your own batt. tray, did you get a charger with the cart? if you did you have to use certain rated batt. for it.My suggestion, go gas, put a big block in it,good luck GENO
