To add to the question, can the motor get wet/ can you drive in water up to the axle?

Motors are not water resistant at all. Water in them will ruin them in short order.

I have driven many electric golf carts through rainy weather and the motor can get wet but it can not be submerged under water. In that case the brushes go bad and the motor can easily short out as water is a conductor and now you have both poles in contact with each other. Let the cart sit and dry for a few days before you try and troubleshoot anything so you dont make the situation any worse.

Scotty B, Volt-Ampere and Cmar143, am I missing the joke?

I have driven both my carts in water deep enough to cover the motors, I wouldn't leave them sitting there long, but they run just fine in water.

I know prolonged use in water would kill the brushes eventually, but if one trip through water killed them I would have killed dozens of motors and brush sets.

Both my carts are 72 volt so it should be worse than a 36 or 48 volt cart.

The motor will run under water - somewhat but the steel brush holders will rust and the brushes will stick. Submerging the motor will ruin it if a significant amount of water gets inside.

I didn't know if the motor was sealed like a trolling motor . I definitely wouldn't submerge it but was wondering if it could handle some wetness
